I understand A series engines remain popular in highly modified form in Japan.

Does anyone know what gearboxes they run behind them there?

I know you can adapt Toyota T50's etc but their standard ratios are no better than Datsun 56 or 60 series.

Also interested to hear views as to any readily available boxes which have reasonably close ratios standard? (Can then worry about how to adapt.)

I need close ratios and 4 speed is fine. Running a 'peaky' 1300 racecar which only comes on cam above 6000rpm. I've tried 56A C/R boxes which were very good while they lasted.

Have a word to topgear about his straight cut dog box. Looks mad and I doubt you could build one for less than $5K

60 series 5 speed with an Albins close ratio gearsets for 1st 2nd and 3rd Gearbox maybe $1000 (or in NZ about $13.75) Gearset $1800 rebuild/assemble maybe another $400 - at least $3000

T50 $150-300 TRD gearset $2000 Dellow bellhousing etc $800 (?maybe more these days?) same approximate cost. The T50 is stronger and parts are a bit cheaper but it's not datsun is it?

Pretty pricey any way you look at it - until you've driven a tuned car with a close ratio box

"IIRIII" at datsun.co.nz is selling a six speed silvia bellhousing (front gearbox casing) which has been modded to fit an A series. I think the ratio's are closer than a 60 series. With 5th being 1:1, and 6th being overdrive.

Can any one tell me more about Albins or put me in touch. Sounds like investigating depending on cost.

Theres a close ratio 56A 4 speed in the for sale section, & it's in NZ.

Contacted Albins - they don't do kits for 60 (or 56) series boxes.

They don't do an "off the shelf" kit, but they will make a custom set. Not entirely sure of the price but something like $600 to 800 per pair of gears.

A 60 series 5 speed g/box that has been converted with three pairs of new gears from Albins Offroad Gears. Ratios 2.66 1.75 1.26 1.00 0.86 Needs one pair of gears replaced. Note that the replacement gears are welded into the cluster
