brodixv8 Posted on: 2003/6/8 11:37
I'm currently installing engine and gearbox. If anyone is contemplating this I'm happy to answer any questions on progress to date.

Not yet but were really happy that you would kindly offer your time and thoughts in regards to this type of conversion. Im sure the MG will really go well now that the mightly A-Series has landed a home in it.

Thanks. Should make a nice little car out of it. Quieter, more HP and more potential to modify if required. I'm trying to be fairly detailed with taking lot's of pictures etc. Makes the job a bit more interesting and easier for someone else to follow if they try it themselves. To date I have'nt found anyone on the net who has done this. As with most engine swaps, there's plenty of traps for the unwary!

Kind regards.
Geoff.

A standard MG Midget weighs around 1575lb.
Suspension is indep. coil/wishbone/lever arm shock at the front. Live axle rear. Std motor (1972) is 1275cc A series motor. 4 speed box. (basically morris minor, no syncro on 1st)The motor's are quite good but the boxes are weak. Purists would argue that one should'nt do what i'm doing but outwardly and from inside the car, no one will notice anything. Apart from one structural cut, the thing will easily be put back to standard if required but quite frankly, it will be a much better car with the conversion. Midgets are fun cars to drive and have quite reasonable road holding ability even by todays standards.

Regards
Geoff.

There is a guy by the name of Don Ashton who has been running one of these around the Victorian Club Sprints and Hillclimbs for a couple of years and it goes pretty well.
It has a worked A14, Webers and a 5 speed.
He told me that the A14 and gear box weigs nearly the same as the Sprite engine gearbox.

Geoff,

I've did the same swap here in the States into a 69 Midget about 6 years ago - currently have my drivetrain for sale, as car met it's untimely demise earlier in year. I have a A14 / 5 speed combo from 1980 Datsun that I used in my install. I hope that you will resist cutting the front crossmember when undertaking the install! I trimmed out & reformed my trans mount & heater box plenum to clear back of bellhousing - used single groove crank pulley to clear front crossmember. Radiator was a recored vertical flow early Midget unit, with a high-flow 3-row core. Ran twin SU's on fabbed intake for carburation while I was working on sourcing a twin side-draft Weber intake for fuel injection install. Also had to fab custom header. Used remote oil filter adaptor to relocate filter to right front radiator support. Also, if you haven't noticed already, the Midget diff flange & Datsun rear driveshaft flange bolt right up!

Good luck with the install - it makes for a nice cruiser! If you have specific questions that I can help with, email me at determined2win@hotmail.com. There are a few cars running around in area with this swap...

regards,
Bryan in North Carolina, USA

saw this done back in the early 1980's, a guy came into the dealer and wanted a tune up, the service writer couldn't believe that an owner of a british car wanted a Datsun dealer to tune up his car. until he opened the hood. same said service writer used to work for the British Leyland franchise down the street.
the cool thing about it was/is that if it wern't for the name DATSUN on the valve cover, no one would have been able to tell that the engine had been changed, it looked like it came that way.
in talking to the owner, he said that there was double the power, twice the gas milage and NO repairs to speak of
that motor and trans came out of a 1976 B210
