Well after putting around in the beast for the last 12 months i thought i'd better let my automotive class have a look at the fluids left in the ute. Between the diff and the 4 speed manual box they were able to drain around 1 litre of oil. Diff took around 1.2l to refill and the gearbox around 2l. The magnetic drain plugs were clear but the oil wasn't that good, it flowed but jeez i'm glad we changed it.

For the $50 worth of oil it is well worth spending 1 hour of your time doing this sort of maintenance.

Tomorrow I'll let them fit up a new exhaust.

50 bucks... anyway i thought id bring this up in this topic, wat oil do u guys use in ur 4 speeds??? im using 50/50 mix of the regular 80/90 gear oil and dx3 seems to shift much smoother with that and i change it quite often.. i even get comments from my mates who all drive new cars that my box feels like a treat to use firm,no fus quick shifts. i feel ashamed to say that ive never changed or checked my diff oil and im sure my one wheelers arnt doing it any favors

I just used Valvoline HP Gear Oil 85W/140, and bought the pump also to make life easier for the boys. A can of degreaser and a couple of rags made for an easy and clean morning of maintenance. There was a very noticeable improvement after it was done, in both the lack of noise and smoothness.

Cheers, yep they are good boys, they know the deal, stuff up = my foot in your ass!!, the Datto is really their project, as well as the 521 Datsun Longbed coming in on Monday. In saying that they are only 15-16 years old and i'm happy for them to work on my VE SV6 and AH Astra also. Funnily enough they work on lawnmowers worth more than the ute!!

yeah 50/50 combo works good, but i found in a race situation the dextron 3 would expand and push the rear oil seal out or out of the breather or even the speedo cable, now my shed wall has like 4 oil seals on it.
i use valvoline duragear 75/85 in my 60 series but i think for the road the 85/140 would be good.
nice to know the guys didnt destroy the ute and actually respect it sam.
cheers kurt
(man that feels weird to actually call you sam mr mcarthy lol)

No worries Kurt, don't worry, we have completely destroyed 3 magnas sucessfully!!

I'm acutally keen to come around and let the boys see the ute on the dyno before we embark on the exhaust and weber upgrade for a "baseline" ha ha
