Sounds like you've dropped a valve.
Might be good to pop the rocker cover off and check to see if they're all still sitting up.
if they are, take the rocker shaft off, turn the motor 90 degrees past TDC, then smack each valve with a SOFT faced hammer and make sure it goes down and up properly.
If thats all good, it might be something in the sump getting between the crank and the block somewhere(broken fuel pump lever, peice of piston skirt), or a bent rod or really badly cracked piston crown.

took the engine out and found the bearing cap on the second piston had come loose, and was preventing the piston from moving all the way down. i need to get the crank reground cos it has got a few marks and chips etc. will the crank, from an A12 fit into the A13 with out too many hassles. or can anyone point me in the right direction to get some work done? while the engine is apart i may aswell go over it and do some minor mods to it. so if anyone has anything they wanna let go, let me kno. cheers

depending on which A13 you have.
If it's the short block variety(stroke:70mm), then the A12 crank will work just fine with no modification required.
If it's an american tall block variety(stroke:77mm) then you may have to play.

It shouldn't cost too much to get your crank ground and fit new bearings though, You already need new bearings, and a second hand crank may need grinding, or at least linnishing for the new bearings.

The A14 crank will fit just fine if it's the american version ( long block )

All of the later [short stroke] A13's that I know of [3 of them] seemed to have an engine number that followed the format A13 xxxxxx A. I suspect that the 'A' suffix denoted the second [short stroke] type of A13. The long stroke version seems to have been for the US only & was a 1974-only offering.

This is the back of the cylinder head of my A15, but is typical of A15, A14 & long stroke A13.
The tall deck/ long stroke engines are about 5/8" or 15mm taller than the short stroke ones & it's most obvious here.

This is the back of my short stroke A13 block. It is typical of all 1200, A12, A12A & s/s A13 engines. [all had 70mm stroke & all these cranks are interchangeable.]

the engine number does end with a (A13 xxxxxx A) and it is definately the same as the bottom picture. so i can assume it is a short block A13, and the A12 crank will interchange?
