OK.....I just bought a Pertronix kit (#1741) and tried to install it, but the magnet thing that fits around the distributor shaft was too small and it broke trying to get it on!
How hard should it be to put this on the shaft? Could I have a distributor on my A15 that is not stock? How can I tell which distributor I have? My engine is an '82 A15 that (as far as I know) is running a '77 distributor....it uses points & condenser, not the elcetric version. Sorry for all the questions.....I'm just a little miffed from breaking a brand new part that I just spent $70 on. Here are a few pics.....you can see where the magnet is getting stuck in the last pic. I had it down where it was flush with the top, but it wouldn't go down any further. So....is this a Datsun distributor?

Thanks........I finally figured out what I did wrong!
As for the distributor.....I have owned this car for 2 years and it takes the points, condenser, cap & rotor for a '77 Datsun B210, so I have to believe it is a stock distributor. Is it possible that Pertronix put the wrong magnet thing in the box? I'm going to give their customer service a call in a few minutes.....hopefully we can figure this out.

That's an MSD6AL capacitance discharge electronic ignition controller. You can use points or electronic distributors with it.
Pertronix as I understand is a "points replacment" system, and not designed for a high-energy coil. I could be wrong, what do the Pertronix specifications/manual say? Brute, B210 in USA used a bigger distributor than B110.

I got my issue with Pertronix figured out. Evidently, some Datsuns came with distributors that have a slightly larger diameter shaft between where the rotor sits and the cam for the points is......this is why teh magnet sleeve would not fit.
Pertronix is sending me a replacement magnet and I will bring my shaft in to have the protrusion lathed down enough to make it all work. According to the guy I talked to at Pertronix, they developed the Datsun kit before they found out about these other, larger shafts and by then it was too late to redesign things.

Hi All,
just wondering is there any change the the ballast resistor setup if you're going to use the pertronix system? are they easy to wire up? do you keep the same rotor etc? Cheers, Tom

With the pertronix setup wiring do you simply go to coil + and coil - or is there more to it with the resistor in play?
I currently have a stock dizzy with a gt40r coil and ballast resistor. Cheers, Tom You can view topic.
