VW made a steam engine in the early 90's inline 3 (so it has the same power impluses as a inline six 4 stroke. but it wasn't double acting like a steam train)

anyway this bad boy was 1000cc made 200+hp and 500nm of torque. this engine was under no stress at all!

Impressive but wonder why they haven't carried this on?

Expensive. I think? and hard to control.

Ok a couple of things i would like explaining then Jordan. Me and my boss have been playing with hydrogen and ive even started a thread on here about it. pretty sure i called it "HYDROGEN"

1-If a plastic jar will implode, why wont a glass one? If the pressure drops too low inside any sealed container it will implode or stop drawing vaccume. It will explode when it is ignited and the flame travels back into the jar.

2-You think your replacing half your petrol with Hydrogen(NOT water) yes? Then how do you get that much gas going through a 4mm hose compared to say a 400mm carby throat while the remaining petrol is still going through the larger entry. There has got to be some sort of mixing value errors there?

3- You dont need a trip meter to do the test mentioned before. Just drive along for a little bit and do a U turn at a intersection or at a specific landmark. And try to drive in the same style.

Pics of the hilman setup would be good too!

Hey all,

I dont really want to get to much into this discussion except to say that; Yes Hydrogen burns and can be used as fuel however it takes more electricity to convert water into hydrogen than it produces, therefor isn't a viable fuel.

I'm not sure if this is because our current technology isnt efficient enough or if its a scientific fact that you cant do it efficiently.

However, if you were to convert the water at home, then use it in the car it COULD work out cheaper than paying for petrol, but then you run into the problem of transporting it.

If you really have any queries you should call triple J on Thursdays and talk to Dr Karl as the Hydrogen Fuel Cell question is quite a regular one.

You could do that but i remember Dr Karl had somebody call up about it a few weeks ago. Im pretty sure he said it didnt do SFA. You cant have a in-extinguashable fuel sorce.

Lime water with two electrified platinum pieces will release pure hydrogen. Did this in science class. Deadly fun! maybe it can be used in a engine?

I think that this might just be the most intelligent thing that you have ever put down to this forum. Well done.

the vacume from the carbie is strong enough to make the plactic container suck inwards and this can make it over flow
i did say implode ? lack of better word :)

well going on how powerfull hydrogen is. and the factor that it has pure oxegen these factors must = a big bang compaired to fuel
for example who has tryed to blow up a fule tank in a car ( i neva have had one go bang where hydrogen one the other hand is so explosive its not funny
so adding this kind of fuel ( hho ) means the motor will make more power with less throttle i guess, and the hydrogen we are makeing is so explosive coz it seem to have a perfect mix of air and fuel so that would be a big plus

and for a nother example with one lil spray of areostart a motor can rev pretty high so i guess thats where the small hose of hho can start to make more cents

but dont get me wronge im not trying to say i know how atoms work or any of the weird stuff we copied this of the net and are having lots of fun ,

theres a guys on u tube that has made his own hho oxy ect theres movies in japan of cars drive huge kms on a tank of fuel while useing hydrogen

From what I have gathered from different sources, hydrogen is an efficient source of transportable energy. So is petrol, however there is a finite amount of it. Hydrogen is infinite as long as you have the electricity to produce it.

Lets just say that we can make electricity from hydro power or whatever other environmentally friendly source to create hydrogen to fuel up our cars.

But the problem with this is that in a crash, hydrogen is alot more explosive than petrol.

So what I want to know is, if our electricity is produced cleanly, then do the efficiency benefits of hydrogen outweigh the safety of having electric cars with the energy stored in batteries?

just something to think about...

That sort of kills a dream i've had for hydrogen powered race cars. I was imagining the safety aspect of only having to fill up you car with water anywhere around the track\ pits\ bush which could result in the refueling areas being utilized for something else

All of the following is taken from various sections of the ABC Science website. Sorry to just copy and past slabs of text, but I think its all relevant...

The story so far
Running a car on hydrogen and oxygen is viable, however with current technology it takes more energy to split the water back into hydrogen and oxygen than the useful energy you get out. Fine if you have huge banks of solar photovoltaic cells, and lots of water, but it does involve significant capital costs. Also, storing the hydrogen and oxygen is complex and/or expensive.

Used in West Oz
Hydrogen cars are used in various parts of the world. In West Australia they are trialling buses with big hydrogen tanks. One of the problems is that you need the infrastructure in place, such as hydrogen fuelling stations, or technology to convert hydrogen from the air.

New Development
Researchers have split water into hydrogen and oxygen by replicating how plants use photosynthesis to make carbohydrates. The team of Australian and US researchers says their findings, could lead to a cheap and easy way of making hydrogen, which many experts believe is the green fuel of the future.

There is a heap more on there if anyone has the time to read it all...
