Hey, what clutch have people used and recomend?

It will be used behind an late model A12 for a little while before i install the A15 in the next couple of months. I'll be using a 60L 5 speed (FS5W60L).
(*should i use the A12 or A15 flywheel?)

The A12 is standard and the A15 will only have minimal work done, and its just for street use.

Cheers in advance

First have a look at your throwout bearing sleeves. If you have a long and a short type then you have your choice between the 2 flywheels. If they are the same weight then the decision is 6 <> 1/2 dozen. Personally I would use the A12 flywheel as the mass of the flywheel is closer to the crankshaft. With that use the longer of the 2 throwout sleeves. (i'm pretty sure you have both) Probably a 1200 ute clutch should do the job nicely for street use.

is there any particular vannette year or engine that i should quote when ordering the clutch, which one did you use?

does anyone else have any suggestions?

i'll go and weigh the two flywheels that i've got and use the lighter of the two.

anyone got prices for getting their flywheel lightened, location in the south eastern suburbs would be good to.

spoke to one place and it was $40 to machine the clutch face + extra (?) to lighten it.

when i looked at the clutch book there were only 2 listings for the vanette, one for a12 and one for a15....both the same part number for the pressure plate though
so should be right just saying that you want a vanette clutch

a12 fly already lighter than a15 so i would suggest that one. mine is a12 fly supposedly but they look the same, only way to tell would be to weigh it.

Go to a clutch specialist & ask for a heavy duty clutch to suit an A14. This is what I used for years with no problems other than normal wear. this should give you a slightly heavier clutch pedal, & better clamping. As for the flywheel, use the A12, as they are usually slightly lighter than A15 flywheels.
The longer throwout bearing housings are usually needed due to the greater distance from the front of the bellhousing to the front 'bulkhead' of the A14 4 speeds & 5 speeds, plus that horrendously thick & heavy plate that goes between the block & the gearbox. I usually take this plate out & use the clutch cover from a sunny auto gearbox, which has the larger holes for the 8 mm bolts on the A14 boxes. I don't know what using the longer bearing housing would do, probably only cause the clutch pedal to contact the diaphram a bit sooner, but then again it might cause the diaphram to go overcentre. I do know that putting a short housing in when you should have used a longer housing causes great distress, as you then have to pull that *****N* gearbox back out to fit the right one .

the a14 heavy duty is the same as the a12 and a15 heavy duty by major manufacturers... daikin etc. unless they actually custom make one such as boofheads, they are the same one. so a clutch specialist wont provide much other information other that what bearing to possibly use but even then they probably wont know as the a series 5 speeds are seldom seen for many a year.

actually, the vanette one is a different pressure plate part number to the rest of them as it has more clamping pressure stock

to a HD vanette clutch should actually be heavier than a HD for a 1200

but then if the guy ordering the clutch is cluey enough you can actually get a pressure plate with more clamping load than a HD for around the same price

the guys at repco aren't the most helpfull people when it comes to finding parts for anything other than a ford or holden.

thanks for all the suggestion guys
