How tough is the std 1200 auto?

Has anyone turboed their A series and stuck with the standard 1200 auto?
Did it last? How did it perform?

I would say that the JATCO auto is tougher than the 56 series manual maybe even the 60 series. The JATCO's were also fitted behind engines that produce much more torque than the A-series engine

I have often wondered about using an auto box as a '3 speed dragbox' behind a turbo'd A-series motor but i'm guessing you would need a better or after market stall converter. I don't know any company that sells them i think they would have to be a custom job.
I would like to know how they stack up in a drag race coping extensive abuse, with burnouts etc. So the A-series auto boxes are JATCO boxes?

It's basicaly the same box as what VL comador's had only diferent belhouseing a "lighter" clutch pack's and whatnot, so if you were puting one behinde a pritty wilde motor you could probly go wth vl turbo inturnles and it would be unbreakable.

I have been using the same auto box in khanacross/ motorkana cars for several years now I've replaced the shell twice, several motors and many h165 diffs, current motor is an A14 turbo, the last one was an A15 turbo. I think the only thing I have had no trouble with is the auto box and it does get a hiding, Does great handbreak turns all the time. Sorry i have had a problem its that the flex plate to cranksharft bolts have come lose a couple of times. Apart from that they are very stong boxes.

thats interesting!
So it changes gears smoothly? do you use 1st and 2nd and then drive? or just stick it in drive?and also do you use the standard converter or an aftermarket converter?

1st and 2nd never drive, 1st is geared similar to 2nd in a manul box so I use a 4.8 diff to get it of the mark. The converter is standard and the downside is that I carn't use a big cam as it needs a standard cam to give it the herbs down low ( slow speeds )

If you are running a turbo you don't need a big cam. In fact turbo lag would be the biggest problem of running an auto. You wouldn't find a converter small enough to give you a high enough stall anyway. Maybe from a 900cc Diahatsu??
Olboy, whats the best techinique to get her off the line? Bag it up in 1st with the foot on the brake? What revs does the auto let you pull?

TCE Convertors will modify anything. They are the best in the buisness.
