Hey John I would go for the $400 complete engine especially since its going to be rebuilt anyway. I payed $400 for one less turbo just for spares make sure the 4 coil packs or still there as they are quite expensive to replace.
Also while your over in Japan should go get some hitech gear for the CA18det HKS do cams for close to $2500 !!!! bit of a joke if you ask me.

$2500.00 !!!!! for a pair of cams...... gezzz do you get a giesha girl with each pair Andrew...... hehehehehe

One question Andrew, as you have been there and done that with these engines....... Do many of the main after market parts suppliers make parts for specific applications with the CA18DET???

Just curious

John
Be sure to pick up a metal head gasket over there, they charge around $600 for good quality name brand ones like HKS and Trust over here. They are a damn sight cheaper over there and it will fit easily into your luggage. Every thing else you can pick up reasonably cheaply here.

Yes a lot of the Japanese performance shops HKS JUN TOMIE ect do parts for the CA18det not as many bits as the SR20 but you can get them. Only problem being they are all over priced to buggery.
Can get most bits locally at the right price forged pistons and rings around $1200 custom rods $1500 these are probably about the most expensive parts of a rebuild I didnt use custom rods in mine as with race preping ect are good for 450hp as long as you keep the revs below 8200. Ive ocasionaly spun mine past that with no problems to date. Expect to spend around the $10k mark for a well built 400+hp CA18 Including turbo ect.
