So how similar is the 120y engine bay compared to that of a 1200?

pretty similar. but 120y is eaiser for l series conversion as you can use the 180 b xmember i think to bolt L series onto, just change steering geometry a bit.

It's not as simple for a 120Y as 'just bolt up a 180B X member'. By doing so you have to use different LCA's and castor rods. You can't use your swaybar and you have to get a custom job done. The track is widened by 100mm so you either have to use adjustable LCA's to narrow the track or get different tie rods to cope with the extra track. Then you end up with a healthy dose of bump steer. It will cost extra $$$ to get the thing to steer right and your rego department won't like it.

In either case it better if you start with an auto as there is more room at the rear of the tunnell. Makes life easier.

LCA's mount 50mm either side wider. The LCA's between them are the same length only with massive bush's. That's how they get the extra track for the 180B. Plus you move to a rear bowl sump instead of front.
