my 2 cents worth....
Castrol RS and the Full Synthetic Valvoline are great! I ran the A12 on RS, and the FJ runs Valvoline. the bugger is, they're around $20 per litre, and the FJ holds 10 litres.
They are the only two 'big name brand' oils that I'm 100% sure are fully synthetic.
There is a labelling issue in NZ, where you can label an oil as 'sythetic', but it aint.
I've never run penzoil, and know nothing about it, but it appears a lot in speedway cars, which is a positive indication in my book!

Lets face it, good oil is the cheapest form of insurance you can buy, you'd think nothing of spending $200 on a tyre, or a shock, so why even think twice about oil changes....

I'm with Tsillay, good oil is cheap insurance, I'm a fan of Motul (which I run in my race engines) or castrol RS / Mobil 1 in good roads cars.

I believe you get what ya pay for in oils!
- pay s@#t you get s@#t

I use Penrite HPR40 in my tired A14 and Castrol GTX3 in my 1997 Toyota Starlet. I started using Penrite oil on the recommendation of my brother and I have since changed the diff and gearbox oils over to Penrite as well. Good stuff at very reasonable prices.

It's true, once you start using a synthetic
you should not switch back. I serviced a
Lexus es250 for a customer for 10 years
using Mobil 1 and it never leaked. He traded
it on a new car last year and we put regular
oil in it and sold it as a used car. within a
month it was back leaking from every seal
and gasket.. If you plan to keep your car
for a long tome use synthetic.. just warn
the next guy that they better keep on
using it.

p.s. Most es250s leak from everywhere
anyhow :)

If dino oil works great at $1 quart, why pay more for something else that "works great"? Isn't that like buying two insurance policies?

I understand that for engines highly stressed (running at high rpm or high load for long periods of time, i.e. racing) that synthetic oils are definitely superior.

Racers use Penzoil, Castrol, etc because the companies promote it and pay awards to the cars that advertise it.

i found that if your seals are good, then syntheic wont leak, but if crap will leak more than with a thicker normal or organic oil.
had to chane my main rear seal as well as my gearbox seal with castriol magnatech cause it leaked trough the old 10,000km rear seal that was accustomed to thicker oil.

Wubbits, that is right, I read it and I never went back to regular oils in my jeep and I have not started to use synthetic in my Datsuns untill the good stuf comes in(headers, cam twins), the synthetic bonds to the gaskets, and the regular oils do not, if anybody uses synthetic oils, you CAN NOT go back to regular oils.
A way to witness synthetics are way better, I witnessed it, is to drive hard your engine on your regular oil, and then, when ready to spend that extra money(well worth it) in oils forever(you can not go back ), try driving hard , you will see that your engine drives cooler, much cooler, recovers faster(after a fast run, go to iddle or slow driving, it will cool off faster) and that is a sure measure that your oil is more efficient.
Nicholas, Mobil, here in US (in S A should be the same if you have , as mentioned , Mobil brand,)... we have Mobil synthetic oil, as well as Mobil 1/2 synthetic(known as blend) and regular Mobil oils. I use Mobil synthetic in my jeep, and it works excelent. If there is Mobil synthetic in S A , check it out, must be good. You can call Mobil corp representatives in S A and ask if it is the same synthetic oil sold by Mobil in US. Here it has excelent reputation.

I once saw testing done on all the synthetic oils on a dyno.

And yes...using synthetic oil actually increased power output. It was a fair while ago, but from memory I think Mobil 1 was the best.
