mmmm in 1970 the 1200s were doing a 3.25 qualifying lap.
at the festival of sporting cars at easter time i did a 2.59.45 in my a15 powered 1200 coupe running on a048's in regularity wow, now i realise just how quick the little 1200 is in comparison. and it probably would have about the same hp as the cars back then too.

Is it the same length circuit?

I not sure how much modifying they were allowed to do in those days too - I think the tyres had to be stock...

Still good going!

I'm pretty sure the track's different, although I can't remember if it is longer or shorter. I remember reading about the fact that the george fury bluebird set the lap record that stood for years but then the track was changed in the late 80's (guess) meaning all lap records beforehand were obsolete.

I'm sure it's on the web somewhere but can't be bothered looking

yeah the track is longer now, they added the chase in, in 1972 i think, to stop people killing them selves as they came under the bridge. i can see why but, coz the little 1200 crossed to the other side of the road on conrod with a little bit of a cross wind, man that caught my attention quick!!!

If the times were from 1970 they were racing under 'series production' rules which means they were basically in the same condition they left the factory, with a roll cage and tyres being two of the main things allowable/changed. The only reason we had things like the ford gtho's and xu-1 torana bathurst specials (and e49 chargers) were to make the required (and I forget - it might have been 200 or 250) minimum production figures to make that model/limited edition eligible to race. Around 1973 or 74 (I honestly don't remember) they changed the rules, and got progressively more liberal, so the car had the same basic bits as the factory, but the heads could be ported, cams and exhaust were basically free, so massive changes in potential output, and less need for hi-po factory examples to ensure they were competitive.

So put in perspective, the times by the dattos in 1970 aren't actually that bad at all!

hi mate

it would be awsome if you mounted a camera in your 1200 and took some video of a few laps or something

that would be spectacular viewing
