water leak
Guest_
okay now that i have my new windscreen, i found that i have another water leak in the heavy rains today in melbourne.
Its coming from the windscreen wiper arm on the passengerside of the dash. I thought i sealed this bastard up last month but it did it only in the heavy rain.
Does anyone know h or can instruct me as to how to seal it up for good. Silastic obviously does not cut it at this one.
If i seal it it means i can put the streo back in and not have to sing to myself anymore, which will be to everyones benefit (if you have heard me sing at the lghts...forgive me, dont pity me).

still waiting on rebuild kit from mate and the time to do it. also unsure of neelde sizes. What about the emulsion tubes?
Also the water choke annoys me, i have to redirct my redirected heater hoses.
Pluss it had sawdust in the carb so not a bolt on propisition. its in good nick otherwise.
How did you hook up the accelerator cable to your 32/36? i really am lazy at the moment and havent really looked at that part yet.

If it's coming down the wiper arms, you'll need new seals for the wiper axles. These commonly go out of shape and stop sealing. I think you'll find that 1600s (510) use the same rubber boot. Sometimes the rubber boot that goes over the white plastic bit has perished. Also The rubber that sits under the plastic support for the wiper axle, which is held on by 3 screws, this bit of rubber sometimes perishes/shrinks and needs to be resealed with some silastic to the body work under the dash. Use non acidic sealing silastic, otherwise you will promote rust.

So remove the wiper arms, and get under the dash and undo the 3 phillips head screws (each side) that hold the wiper arms to the under dash. Cheack the seals and surrounding metal, because if this hasn't been looked at for a while. It's possible that there's rust around the hole, that is letting water bypass the seal, and leak into the cabin.

The most common cause of wet floors in Datsun 1200s (especially ones left out in the rain).. Is that the box section between the dash and the firewall (i.e under the windscreen) rusts out, causing pinhole leaks, that are almost impossible to fix.

Chris

dude, its not that hard

did one on my mates gem, didnt use the choke, just took it off and plugged the holes with silicon, and used a piece of standard gemini nickei carby to mount accel cable, there was a site we found showing how to mod it, very easy to do ill find the site and link it later then you can go get the bits off a gemini to do it

You can replace the water choke with a standard electric choke. Works nicely.

thanks for the info guys. links would be good.
If i could find an elec choke, i would grab it but they are hard to find at the wreckers and expensive when you do usually (at papart and springvale).
Micheal, it would be good to see that site.

As for the leak i have resealed the seal with the 3 screws twice and i think its coming down the shaft now. My desnt have seal on it or a boot cover. that might be the problem. Belive it it or not, this is the only leak i have except for the 1/4 windows now. i have fixed all of the. Only minor rust for a 30 year old car, my mazda had more surface rust than this thing.
