Seriously the FE DOHC is one of the best Mazda Piston 4cyl's.

Stock 170hp cant be bad now can it

Are you talking about the 1.6 then later 1.8 DOHC turbo out of the 4WD familias?

Honda and Nissan both have factory 1.6 NA making that sort of power(and more), its nothing to be that proud of.

If you wanted a piston engine conversion a C18DET or SR20DET would both be easier and better

There are plenty of RWD engines that absoutley sh!t over the 12a..eg FE DOHC mazda engine from 1988 Capella 626, these engines are perfect for turbo charging just lowering the compression the only engine mod needed as the stock internals handle upwards of 350hp..

350hp is nothing for 12a turbo....however ANY 1.8L motor is going to be highly stressed at 350hp.

I'm not saying there aren't any 1.8's putting out those figures and much more...but they are a lot more stressed than a 12a or 13b to do it.

Isn't there some sort of Mazda forum you can join?? Maybe you and Steven with the Triumph can start something up together, for all the cars noone cares about!!

And a fuel efficient rotor???? where???? I think it used to cost me $20 to get my 13BT out of the driveway

Sorry, that should have been worded differently, I meant in comparison to a carb fed rotor. My borther has a 13b race extend port in his RX4 and damn, is that thing thirsty. On the other hand, my mate's rx7 is quite good on fuel after stepping out of the RX4.

I would go with the rotary motor, Im in the states too and it is easier the get a 12a motor than any other motor that are out there. Granted in other countries better motors are avalible but here we are restricted by the laws of smog and other things. The motor that comes here in the states from other countries are week and expensive the modify. Got the corner pick and pull and get a complete rotary motor for 150 bucks. the rotary, you can slap it in and hang on for a lot cheaper that building a hard to find nissan or other good motors. Unless you go with a V8...Naaa

I don't see that the rotary is so bad for fuel-efficiency. My old-school 302 (5 liter) Ford got 15 mpg city or highway, which is no worse than a stock carb-fed rotary.

On another comparo, the 1987 13bt RX7 Turbo II had almost exactly same performance as the 1987 5-liter Mustang LX, but better fuel economy.
RX7 turbo: 17 city 23 highway
LX Mustang: 16 city 24 highway
reference: http://www.fueleconomy.gov

I think the general rule here is: more performance = less fuel economy. Sure a rotary uses more fuel than an A12 -- but it also puts out a lot more performance. Compare like-HP engines.

Just out of curiousity what is involved in fitting a rotary to a 1200?

Also, what sort of power would a slightly modified 12A make? 13B?

Thanks Matty

to put a rotary into a 1200, would involve a new crossmember, a new gearbox tunnel, new gearbox cross member and thats pretty mcuh it, other than all the other things realated to rotaries of corse.

my 12A runs 14.6 1/4 mile times thats N/A with standard card, but superchager coming soon that will bump it up to 350hp ish, so should be fun :)

standard port on a 12A makes 130hp at the flywheel with a good carb exhausts etup.

mild ports around 200hp is available.

extend ports 220hp is achieveable.

bridgeports 260hp.

jay ports 300hp but this reduces engine life as the water galleries get in the way of the porting and get blocked up.

peripheral ports has potential for over 300hp but acheives its power above 8000rpm, and wont idle under 2000rpm. but again engine life is dramtically reduced.
