For the network techs

For a problem so off- datsun topic...

I am building my shed at the new pad. It will be approximatly 100m from the house.
I will be running a power cable to the shed underground, and at the same time wish to connect a phone and network cable to the shed.

the run will be too far to use cat 5e as at 100m the packet loss rate is too high and voltage drop for telephones is too much.

I have aquired some multimode fibre cable.(100m 6 core and 200m 4 core) I think this is the stuff
fibre cable

Is this any good to run underground? (pretty sure it is)
Will I be able to use this for telephone and computer network?

Dodgeman, i believe this is your area of expertise.

The cheapest and easiest option would be to use wifi with voip for the phone.

viop is not an option.
Its not supported by our local excahnge.
wireless is really going to be reliable since line of sight is not possible, and wireless is affected severlyl by weather and objects in its path. Also to transmit that distance, i need to install external ariels on both the shed and house.

hi mate

the longest cat5 cable i have run is only about 30 metres and the packet loss is very minimum

i have never actualy looked into boosters for LAN but i suppose this is an option
the kind i am talking about is what they use in big buildings and schools etc.
(i assume your setting it up as a LAN)
if you can find a 100m LAN cable that is , unless you make your own

you talked about your other option been wireless
i do believe with some patience and setting up this will end up working pretty well

me and my father set up a dish which houses a wireless antenea and sends our W-LAN over the road to our grandparents house (yes we are sending him free internet)
on the other end is the same setup, where the antenea plugs into his PC's wireless card

now for the phone i believe its up to someone else to help throw some options at you

cheers
J

dont forget if you run under ground mark it so you never accidently dig into it so i would suggest a good pvc pipe to run the wires through

100m is the maximum distance that cat5e is rated to. After 100m without repeaters, the packet return time gets too long and packets are dropped and the connection fails.I have setup LANs before, but only with cat5e. I havent used fibre optics before. 'Repeaters' can be any powered device that accepts the cable. (ie repeater, hub, switch, router, pix etc)

The correct colour according to the aus standard for communications cables is green from memory, so thats the colour poly ill be running. The poly will be 30cm from the power cable, as per standard. Both cables will be at a minimum 600mm depth with a warning strip at 300mm.

I can termincate cat5e cable fine, I have the tools for that, and enough pratice now to terminate cables in my sleep.

Wireless is not really an option. The distance is getting a bit long for standard stuff. External dishes would be needed, but clear line of sight is required for reliable connection. i live on a bush block. Line of sight is not possible. Also with rain, trees cause all sorts of interference when they get wet.

I reckon that I can use the multimnode fibre that i have, i just need to find someone to terminate the cable properly.

Thanks

What about Cat6 cable? If you use it with 100mb LAN, can it go more than 100 meter? Or are you using Gigabit LAN?

Cat 6 still suffers from the same issues as cat5e. The distance limitatins have to do with the prevention of 'man in the middle' attacks, and integrtiy of packets. Cat 6 standard provides better throughput (100mb) but the distance limitations still apply.

I Can run cat 5e and boost it at both ends, but then I need to buy undergound rated cable, which is obscene in cost. Its jelly filled and double coated in super tough poly. Great stuff, but just too expensive. As much as new fibre cable, which is what i have here.

Thanks for the replies gents. I know this is a datsun forum, but I hate joining up to a forum for just one question. It makes me feel like such a leach.

Where is Dodgeman when you need him! Damn him and his desire to race BMX!
