Hey guys,
I am just trying to get an Idea of what sort of timing I should be running on an A-series. Also what I should be running for startup timing. 10 degrees sounds right? I have a mild cam (mystery) mild portwork, a14 block, a15 head.

I am not after precise timing values, those can only be tuned while on a dyno or driving. Just some settings that people are running to get some starting figures to work from.

Cheers -Liam

yeah mate start round 8-10 depending on what your running and how modified it is. stock is 5. my A15 race engine takes 17 base and 34 total. all depends on where you are aswell.
hope it helps, kurt

yeh I know it depends on engine load and revvs. It seems I might be in the ballpark for what sort of timing I need. I am running 35 peak at around 4000-4500. Maybe I will back off the idle to 17 from 25 and see how it goes.

yeh it does start. I am running Megasquirt II with EDIS. But I think it has trouble after start. cranking timing is 10. and after starting 25 at idle.

I run 7 degrees BTDC at idle, which is stock for USA emission control.

Are you using the stock distributor? Be sure to disconnect and plug the vacuum hose while checking timing.

25 degrees at idle (without vacuum advance) doesn't leave much room for mechanical advance. Stock timing is 5-10 degrees, depending on year and location. Optimum for power may be in the 12-15 range...but really depends (dramatically) on the engine modifications.

See Tech article A-series Ignition Timing: Base Timing
