mazda has been the only one to perfect the rotary. mercedes tried it and couldn't keep the seals sealed. a few others have tried it with no success. some manufacurers have put it in aircraft and i think some motorcycle was produces with a rotary but mazda perfected Wankel's idea and i dont know if its a patent issue or if everyone else is just afraid to touch it

And don't forget about the rotary lawnmower. Too bad that didn't catch on; we would have had guys making drag mowers out of them.

they do sound like lawn mowers, but they're still a lot of bang for the buck

I have wondered for years why people can have such strong opinions about rotary engines either for or against. I think rotarys are great , they produce smooth vibration free power with stuff all moving parts. Rebuilding a wankel is extremely easy with no boring, honing or valves and cams to assemble and fit. I was once a rotary #### stirrer but after driving a mates RX2 I was converted. OK I have had a few go bang but I have had rods out the side of engines and bent valves too, it happens when you try to get max power from any engine. The new rotary from Mazda from the RX8 is called Renisis (excuse the spelling) and it has just been awarded the engine of the year from a panel of motoring writers from around the world so it can't be too bad. I think there is a lot of bullshit spread by people who really don't know what they are talking about with rotarys too. There is a whole massive industry dedicated to the manufacture of piston engines and parts...Mazda manufactures and supplies it's own parts and does'nt need any one's help. Hence there is bugger all money in the aftermarket for Wankels since Mazda has control. As far as wankels in other machines, they are everywhere.. Sachs build a range of industrial engines and are used for al sorts of things where the traditional Briggs and Stratton engines could be used. They have to be reliable for that. There has been at least 7 brands of rotary motorcycle including the Suzuki RE5 (which I had and should never had sold) . And the Norton Commander series which included a police version, again they need to be reliable.. Since the car has been invented owners have changed engines there are over 40 different cylinder heads that were made to improve the Model Ts performance and today is no different. I'm with the others saying I would rather see a Datto out on the street with a rotor in it than at the dump.

I think there have been several bike manufacturers who have experimented with rotaries. Triumph definately did, they produced some rotary road bikes in the early 90s and even won the isle of man with them (then they banned them cause the piston engines couldnt beat them)...shades of Mazda winning Le Mans anyone

AFAIK Mazda does hold some patents on some components that it has perfected. These will be running out soon so will make it easier for other manufactures to restart development but I personally cant see it happening

Edit: After reading stirlingmac's post I may have got Triumph mixed up with Norton

Well, it's got to be an improvement, but by the time it's very good, our cars will be powered by cold fusion anyway. Quote:

Norton, rotary & reliable in the same sentence?

If we take a look, notice that most of the people that favor the nissan A12 motor are in areas that parts are really easy to come by. Here in the states we get the screwed when they import cars here. We are just now getting the Mitz EVO, when they have been made for some time. It is easier to get a rotary motor and cheaper that any other engine. Im a big fan when it comes to Nissian motor like the, VG30dett, new VG35de, Ca18det, L16,18,20,etc. If I was able to get one of these motors and a Rwd tranny, put it in at a low cost, I would. If I was living in Japan I would have everything possible in my little 12a motor. Right now I had to make my own intake manifold, and hunt for three months via internet for a header, the weber came from Canada. Other internal parts I can't find for good price vs performance. My cars hauls ass but, not enough to keep up. The money I spent already, I could have swaped in something else with more power. Parts aren't easy to find here. That's why we're stuck on swapping in what good motors we can get our hands on.
I love my car and I will always back up Nissan over anyother import.
Some people like to drive fast, others like to drive faster than some people.
