#1 5 speed
iDatto Posted on: 2009/8/11 7:24
i have a 1200 ute with a bog stock a12 and a 56a gearbox,
being a four speed im nearly topping out on the highway
so just incase i need to do more highway driving once i get my p's i was thinking of bolting in a 5 speed
i have no idea where to go from here
but i have been told it will slow my cars acceleration down
so any help with anything about fitting a 5 speed would be most appreciated
such as
price, ratio difference, etc etc
thanks guys, nathan

hi nathan

the ratios are actualy pretty similar
Ofcourse except for 5th

You can find information in the wiki about ratios
i recently paid 800 for a good 5 speed

what size wheel/tyre r u running, going from a 12" to 14" will be like another gear.

Actually, you paid $800 for a gearbox that has a dodgey 2nd gear and if you took it to a repair shop it would cost you a minimum of $600 to repair.

I recently did a repair on a 60L for a guy and 2nd synchro was flogged and the only salvageable synchro was 5th. Still on bottom tolerance too. I only replaced the 1 to get him out of trouble and rotated the others around to try and get the most out of the box, he paid $900 for it and was told that it was in good nick. It also had broken circlip grove on the front of the mainshaft. Sucks to be the owner of an overinflated 5 speed.

Stick with the 4 speed and either change the diff ratio or fit taller tyres. It will be more cost effective.

i would change the diff center to change ratios ey
whats a new center worth and what ratio would i be looking at?

It depends on what diff you have in it now. If it a BW68 you can fit a 3.7:1 but if it is a H150 I think you are stuck with the 3.9:1. You can always increase the rolling diameter of the wheel. Try some 175/65R14 tyres. 14 inch mags are an easy enough find for Datsun's. That would be one cheaper way. Or just put up with it. The A series motor can handle it. It'll do 110kph all day at 4000rpm. Not a problem.

I think you probly actualy hav a H165 with a 4.11:1 diff witch is why it revs so high. Ther are 3.9:1 centes out of some bluebirds, but Im not sure witch year or model?

or you could get a 3.7:1 centre out of a series 1 or 2 bluebird. that will fit in the ute diff and bring the revs down a bit
