no.1 was a little oily so i pulled the head off and found:

theres a little bit of scratching in the bore on no.1 and it feels like there is a little bit of slack there. Time to strip the engine and give it a new life. Any suggestions on parts suppliers for 020 oversize high compression pistons for an a15 in New Zealand? Ill get the head skimmed for sure, may as well get the block skimmed when it goes in for a re-bore. Any other suggestions?

oh and to save me making another thread, im on the lookout for an efi manifold from a 1991-94 hyundai excel to fuel inject this on a budget. Yes, quad throttle bodies to fit my sidedraught manifolds would be nice but out of my price league, I am trying to get the car finished for april

well ive used about ten litres in that car so far so dont know oil consumption. Its in a project morris minor and it was smoking a lot, first i thought it was over fuelling but then i occured to me that the smoke wasnt black enough for that.

no it seized a bit on that piston u can see where, must have sat for a long time, have a good look for bent valve or pushrod on that cyl while u have it apart.

A very common piston is the mazda E5. These are .040 oversize, and require .9mm decking off the block, and the little end of the conrod opening up by 1mm also. But they have a lots smaller dish, so you get mucher higher comp. Plus AFAIK, they are easier to get new than A15 pistons which are getting harder to find new.

so what happens with the conrod again? i didnt quite understand what you meant. does the piston have a 0.9mm shorter height than the a15 piston? Are the gudgeon pins the same? is the mazda piston designed for a conrod which is 1mm wider?

Just need to find this information out so i can let the engine re conditioner know what to do with the block.

oh and also, mazda pistons are available in flat top (from the laser 1500 sport) or dished top. Which one should i go for? here i can only get 95 octane fuel, not the really flash stuff so dont really want a compression ratio which is going to cause the engine to pre ignite on 95 fuel.

The gudgeon pin is 1mm bigger than the A15, so you have to have the small end of the conrod opened up to take the larger pin.
if you use these pistons in your engine, at TDC the piston will be .9mm below the top of the block. The block can be decked down to reduce this. Regarding your compression ratio, ask your engine guy what he thinks will work best on your engine.....
