how long would a standard H165 diff last behind a stock ca18det?

Judging by your avatar not long.

$1500 - $2000 including the purchasing of the diff if you outsource the work and have it done properly. This will depend on what anti tramp set up you want to run, if any, and what centre you decide to go with.

Diff housing and axles need to be shortened, handbrake set up modified, tailshaft modified, diff mounts cut off H165 and welded to R31 diff.

Keep in mind that your choice of centre can greatly affect the price. An LSD is preferable but harder to find and will need a rebuild (rebuilds are quite cheap on cone style centres). Open, locker or mini spool will be cheaper than an LSD.

Your H165 will live behind a CA for awhile provided you are gentle.

Start doing skids like in your old avatar or tracking the car and the diff's life will be short.

I don't think you need a conversion kit as such for a stumpy box to fit - you do need a new gearbox crossmember, and on some boxes you need to change a bearing to fit with a CA bellhousing (all in wiki land I belive).

I just made up my own crossmember...time will tell how wise a decision that is...
