like its already been said, you need to talk to an engineer. lots of people say things can be engineered even if they dont comply to the DOT guide lines

engineers can engineer anything into anything. but it doesnt mean that you can get rego on it any easier

so if you actually want a real answer that will actually mean something to you and be of some use. find an engineer and talk to them about what can be legally engineered in the car for road use

In NSW, it has to go by the modifications guidelines which can be found on the RTA website. An engine up to XXXX capacity can be legally engineered into XXXX chassis weight. They determine that by the heaviest model (fully optioned with auto, etc...). The engine, mounts, turbo all have to adhere to certain clearances and like PIGDOG said, only an engineer can tell you, even then i doubt he would tell you the specifics as its trade secrets so-to-speak.

The CA18 can just fit in a 1200 coupe because its so light. The difference is whether or not the engine is a turbo. An N/A SR20 are legal (after being engineered) but a turbo ones are not. You can put a turbo on it after be ing registered but if u get pulled up and the cop knows wat to look for... your dead in the water with a hefty fine.

Take PIGDOG's advice, take your car to an engineer and say whats the biggest engine i can get to be legally registered in this. He should tell you, then its up to you to find a shop that knows what they are doing to get the clearances right and therefore, be able to be engineered. :)

**I'm not sure but i THINK there is a loophole for utilities in the power-weight equation. Will see if i can find out and get back to you. :)

well i spoke to an engineer and he said that the 13b is only considered 1300 but the turbo 13b is considered 2600, how dose that work?

it doesnt, speak to a different engenieer or start reading this

The engine capacity to be used for rotary engines is the displacement of all rotors x 2.

Its not hard to search registration web sites for info

i reckon you can get anything registered (apart from the stupidly obvious) you'll find someone that'll bend the rules

Or pick up the phone and call the appropriate authorities for a definitive answer...

It's hard asking all these questions on the internet cause they are location specific and are constantly changing, eg there is an 808 in the ACT with a 20BT engineered but it was passed in the mid to late 90's and you would have zero chance of getting anything like that passed now as all the rules have changed.

Like lethal_john said you'll nearly always find someone to engineer anything but it doesn't mean it is legal at all. To be picked up the cops etc. all they need to say is that they suspect that the car is illegal for an inspection to be issued.

You can always just drive a car without an engineers and run the risk but have fun with insurance hassles if you have a crash.
