They are usually used in high load / stress situations. Found usually on auto trans if the car does a lot of towing, mainly due to auto fluid being.......well.....auto fluid really.

As for engine oil cooling - you very rarely see it done on small 4 cylinders, I spose because you can simply buy very high quality oil these days that can sustain very high temperatures.

With oil you get what you pay for.............

I hope this helps in some way

OIL COOLErS COULD B USEFUL IF u TURBOCHARGE A na ENGINE to produce about twice as much power, as its oil system is not built with turbo heat in mind. u can also check oil temp of fully warmed engine indepndently of coolant temp and c if its ok with the oil spec. again if r using synthetic oil u could get away without oil cooler imo.

Yea my brother runs an oil cooler on his stanza rallycar, the idea is cooling the oil in your engine as well as the water in it is a lot more effective than just cooling the water. It is another way of fixing overheating problems but doesn't work if your radiator is dead.

You'll find that a lot of older turbo 4's run an oil cooler out of the factory, such as a pulsar et. I think its just due to the fact that turbo's heat the oil to rediculously high temperatures. I think they are a good idea on any turbo'd car.
