My 1200 coupe has a 35 litre fuel tank [according to the manual] & when reading exactly on the 'E' I can squeeze 30 litres into it.

You do the maths.

Hi Dodgeman

So guess that there are 5 ltrs in the tank ,ok tell me when it comes to E are you able to start your car ? then we can get an idea how much of minimum fuel that you want to start the car.

Thanks
Regards

I can not only start it, but I can drive it 20 miles [32k] to the fuel station to fill it up again.

Remember that I have a 1200 coupe & you have a newer model so the amount of 'useable' fuel may be more or less.

If you have an owners manual for your car, then look in the 'specifications' section to find the fuel tank capacity, then drive it till it is ont eh 'E' mark & fill it up. You can then quickly calculate how much was still in the tank.

Next, do a couple of mileage tests to see ho far it goes [on average] per gallon or litre.

If you calculated that there was 6 litres in the tank [for example] when the gauge read 'E' & you get 15k/ litre then multiply that number by HALF of the fuel that remained in the tank.

Lets see, .. in this example we multiply 15 x 3 & get 45k [about 27 miles] of reasonably safe reserve after it hits 'E'

Your actual calculation will naturaly be different.

That is all good info, But in the end its a resistance guage and any corrosion on the sender will affect the reading (also in the wiring loom), and so its different in every dato to some degree.
