Just seeing what its going to cost me for a single SU Carb to do a draw through turbo setup. Sizes and prices are a good start CD or Hitachi type is good.

If you were playing with an a12, I'd suggest a 1 1/2 su being ok, but there'd be some potential gains in going to a 1 3/4 for a high boost and high rpm a12, and of course, most a14/15s would want the 1 3/4. Theoretically, or when restricted to a single 1 3/4, people have managed over 200bhp from a single 1 3/4 but realisitcally they would be a setup that would make more than the 200 (or whatever figure higher than 200 they got with said 1 3/4) with either twin 1 3/4 or a single 2 inch SU.

I _think_ that possibly some rare (rare here, since the vast majority sold were mech fuel injected. the carb models also didn't run HEI, but simple points ignition, so it was like the 'down on power vs the FI model, but fixable anywhere with very basic tools' version) - anyway I seem to recall they had single or twin Strombergs (which are essentially the same in principle) 1 3/4 carbs - on the non FI volvo 240 series. The 140s did too, but not sure on size. You 'might' come across a carbed volvo at pick a part, so it should be the go.

If you go new or reco'd through some of the very few carb specialists still trading, they will likely charge an arm and a leg. A volvo wrecker or pick a part is likely a cheaper option.

I may have a few 1 1/2 Sus (the HS type with external/remote fuel bowl) lying around. if I do (and keeping in mind I'd suggest running a single 1 1/2 only on an a12) I'll post back here, I'd be wlling to part with them (if I've still got em, I did sell a few a while back) for $40 each. naturally they'd need a reco (needle and seat, possibly but not definitely throttle shaft, and again possibly but not definitely jet - since they don't run sprung/biased needles like the HIF type they generally don't see the jet wearing down much)..

EDIT: ok I just had a look. I've got 1 hif44 SU (integral fuel bowl) which is essentially an updated 1 3/4 SU, it was one I had on a street driven mini (nearly 1400cc). So the needle and spring are probably an ok match down lower and up to freeway cruise speeds for a turbo a14/15 but you'd want one thinner (or carefully file it down a little at the narrow end - the last 10mm or so). I'll part with that for $50

I've got one hs style 1 1/2 carb, but where it is I can't get at it easily to take it out and check condition, so I'll post back on that tomorrow.
