I have an old ish Ca18det and some of the plugs have had issues with corrosion. I have had these fixed.

What is strange is that when my car starts cold, there is a stench of fuel - it runs way too rich. The idle is terrible.

Then when it reaches operating temperature, the idle is fine and the mixtures are fine. You can hear the revs change suddenly.

Would it be the water temp sensor? I just had it replaced and rewired. pulling it out when the engine is on seems to make no difference!
Any thoughts? Maybe the wires (blue and blue/brown) have been wired wrong?

it would probably be the cost start making it idle higher ,the motor should idle high for 30 seconds to stop it from stalling ,as far as i know the start/cranking signal should send a pulse to all the injectors while the motor is being cranked over ,this signal will be sent by a wire running to the the start relay ,this signal tells the computer to send a pulse to ALL the injectors while cranking to prime the engine with fuel and im not sure if it continues to do this once the motor is started but this would probably have something to do with your fueling problems

hope this helps

It is leaky injectors. when you turn off the engine, the fuel rail still has pressure. if the injectors are old or dirty, they will leave a half cup of petrol in the intake as the line pressure relieves.

if you haven't cleaned the injectors professionally, please pay the $100 to get it done.

These engines are 20 years old, and were designed to last 5 or 10 years at most.

Thanks guys.
The car also seems particularly smelly with fuel vapour which seems to be in keeping with the theory of leaking injectors. I suppose potentially I could also be using more fuel because of this?
Would leaky injectors show up in a fuel pressure test??? I think a small leak may not?
Getting the injectors out can be tricky - I guess I will have to remove the entire inlet manifold...
Cheers

12mm socket to the tubular manifold braces.
10mm socket to fuel rail into block.
14mm spanner to bolt holding rail nearest to firewall.
do it when engine is cold. get 10 paper towels to soak up fuel from rail.
dont smoke.

Ive done an injector change on the side of the road at the 2005 datsun nationals.

Impressive! can't be that hard then. I will need a new manifold gasket set and probably some new rubber o-rings for each injector...
cheers
