Hey guys,
I'm after a bit of help I want to desolder a 28 pin IC off a PCB, I have a soldering irn and desoldering vacuum thing, but it seems to be hard on the top side of getting that solder off (top side being where the pins come out of the IC and go down through the PCB.

You are right about it being hard.

These things are soldered in using a solder bath arrangement. They are rarely "de-soldered". Are you doing the ECU chip upgrade?
I would recommend getting a "hell sharp knife" or small pair of side cutters, and cut the chip off the board, then de-solder the pins one at a time, or using a dremel, grind the surfaces kinda flat, and re-drill out the holes carefully.

You will only end up cooking the chip, or cooking the PCB pads trying to desolder it one at a time.

ps. Also remember that sometimes PCB board (like pc motherboards) are up to 7 layers thick..so desoldering components off these boards is NOT AN OPTION.

yeah i tried the hell sharp knife method but when i wasn't concentrating I sliced a cm off my left thumb, so it's been al bandaged up for the week.

You should be able to desolder the IC from the bottom of the board. Just add a little solder to the foot of the pin and when its all 'wet' use the sucker - it should remove the solder from all around the pin 'top to bottom' - I use to do this for a living on old Wyse terminals!!

Is this an expensive IC you are replacing???

Be careful not to put too much heat into it when resoldering as they are very delicate.

Although since it is only a 28 pin it shouldn't be too bad.

When working with some IC's you have to use a heatsink while soldering and wear an earth strap to avoid static. You will notice, the IC probably came in an anti-static bag

if its very expensive why not go to dick smith's and get some of the ic things that has the same amount of pins that u solder in then push the ic into , that way its impossible to put too much heat into it.

Yeah i got the old one out and the new one in already. Soldering the new chip in took only minutes with only minimum heat used. Taking out the old one prolly rooted the old IC as it took alot of desoldering to get it out.
