I'm currently having an LSD fitted to my 1200 ute from an R31 Skyline. These diffs aren't significantly heavier than the H165 and there are several ratio choices available. It's going to cost me about $1700 with new brakes and an anti-tramp kit.

can you explain what the anti tramp kit consists of and how it works please,
i thought id add more bout the h190 too: -it has various ratios, 3.9,4.1 and 4.9 -can put bluebird disc over drums on (straight bolt up for brake lines and everything) -only thing required to modify is to move the mounts accross a small distance -has 90mm more track than standard diff cost 170 tops plus brake conversion at 120 tops moving mounts 50tops depends on wrecker prices on diff and brakes once fitted you can use FWD offset rims to have wheels sit inside standard guards, or alternatively fit flares and RWD offset for a fatter stance

If it was me, I'd find an H165 1200 ute housing and axles and run whichever of the C20 vanette, Bluey or B310 ratios I felt like on the day.
The H190 is actually not mucho lighter than a 9 inch. You can get the alloy heads out of early vanettes, but the axles for these are exactly the same as the H165's. The late model alloy heads which let you run the 30mm axles are hard to find now... The 165 centre shouldnt break if you baffle the axle housings and increase the oil carrying capacity (move the filler plug up an inch!!) The axles will twist up first. I wouldnt run the 90mm wider C20 axle, unless you plan on increasing the front track by a corresponding amount. I'm just going thru the process of narrowing up a C20 housing, it's not too difficult to knock about 45mm of track out of it, and just shorten the axles. There's enough spline there....It makes the leaf spring hangers line up bangon too! fwd rims on a rwd car is a nono, unless you engineer everything else accordingly. The 1200's were designed with the KPI et al setup for the rwd offset. You'll stuff up the steering feel and scrub radius if you get this wrong. The other option here is the good ole ford escort diff. They line up on the spring hangers beaut, and are roughly equivalent to an H165. gofast parts for them turn up all the time, so you'll find a cheap slippery no problem. Gawd, what a novel this turned into!

I had a severe tramping problem with my ute but fixed it through a good suspension setup rather than resorting to tramp rods. The leaf springs had to be reset with an extra leaf. Im pushing out well over 200rwhp and dont ever have a tramping problem.

id say not
but my bro has been lookin into "lock-rite" lockers and stuff and it would seem they are better than lsd especially for the price ($600 i think) but thats just going by what he says i havent looked into it fully or got a proper description but he reckons its a better thing than an lsd, he is getting one for his surf this x-mas and he says hes gonna put one in his rally car too, see how it goes first, its not a constant lock hing it aloows one wheel to spin faster round corners ect ect

Lock rites are great. I've got 2 in my wife's Surf with 5.29:1 gears and 35" tires and haven't broken anything yet and haven't got stuck yet.
They're a bear to drive with the big tires on the street but as soon as I put the stock tires on for inspection all the worries go away so I'd think they'd be great in a light car with small tires. I don't think they make them for datsun diffs but would buy one in an instant if they were available. Maybe we can all get together and email the company. Show enough interest and who knows?

You can buy a wide range of new escort stuff from a variety of manufacturers... Look around and see how many places you can buy a new Datto LSD or SCCR gearbox by way of comparison!.... There's dealers who do nothing but second hand escort competition parts, the stuff is everywhere! You must have internet access, do you know about search engines???? I imported a 5 speed C/R gearkit for a Sierra box from england a few years ago now, cost me $1200. Compare this to the $4700 i spent on the NISMO box in the 240.... You can view topic.
