#1 Price to shorten R31 Axle
old_school Posted on: 2010/8/17 8:16
Whats a fair price to shorten R31 Axle?

Been quoted $180 to shorten and re-spline.

Cheers

first one i got done, got quoted $160 at a diff place. then went straight to the engineering joint that did it for them and got it done for $100, next one was $110, one after that was $121

they just kept thinking that the price i told them it cost me last time was before gst

dont know what it would cost me now, but $180 seems kinda fair if you are giving it to a diff place and they are getting it shortened

How come your only doing one?

These are damn cheap prices. I am truly surprised at the value.

CA_1200_project, you only shorten one as you use the original short axle as the new long axle then get the original long axle shortened to take up the rest

so in other words dattodude, you got ripped off

Make sure if you ever shorten a diff it is always best to not machine and respline axles at the factory the spline is rolled compressing and strengthening the metal and it is then correctly heat treated afterwards, they certainly are not doing it properly for even $250.00
You can shorten a diff by using the short axle trick but do not reverse the rotation of the axle from it's original fitted position and buy a new genuine replacement for the other one, that way you will not encounter stress reversal which will cause a failure and you will have 2 rolled spline heat trteated bulletproof axles.

coxsteve, sure what you say is true, and it will result in a really strong diff...but until i see a 1200 break an R31 axle that is done this way i'll have to stay a firm believer that there is nothing wrong with doing like this

it is how alot of diff shops do it and its only if they get billet axles that it is done differently...but even then i'd assume the spline is still cut on not rolled

ive never seen or heard of an axle failing coz the spline has been stripped off it, its always axles actually snapping. so the thread rolling vs cutting cant really be that much different in the real world

if rolling a spline or buying billet axles was as cheap then all diff shops would be doing it aswell. i understand the engineeering with stress in the materials but again i also believe that if you cut a new spline and heat treat it then this would be just as good. just a thought
