#1 spray painter advice/help needed
PIGDOG Posted on: 2010/9/14 10:36
sprayed with my new gun today for the first time and it appears that i have a problem

its a gavity feed gun and the filter at the bottom of the paint res/holder thing seems to be getting blocked up reall quick
spraying acrylic primer thinned 2 parts paint to 3 parts thinners, gave the paint a good stir before using it, then a stir again when mixed with the thinners, then shook it a bit once in the gun so figured that it should be mixed up enough

but yeah, that is my problem

Have you used that primer in other guns or is it a new tin. I got a bad batch a couple of years ago, strained it through a stocking and found very fine grit. Just a thought.

i had the same problem for ages man, using a new gun. i was using a compressor that was set pumpin high psi, now im using a lesser HP compressor with a thinner hose and i havent had any dramas at all. could just be that it was a new gun, could be that he compressor was set too high for the gun to handle. try just running thinners through it for a minute

air pressure is set at 60psi at the reg, so will be less than that

thinking i might have to filter the whole tin before i mix it up, its a new tin of paint and wouldnt know in the other gun as it doesnt have a filter in the pickup (bottom feed gun)

is it a cheap gun.. ive had problems with some of the cheaper ones. and try using a filter when pouring after mixing it, it really helps get dust and crap out of the mix

what sort of primer are you using, a high fill? cos they'll take less thinnning so it goes on thicker, but yeah it clogs the gun pretty easy. I only know cos i wrecked a gun learning the hard way :P i thought the ratio for most brands was 4 parts to 1, but i havent really primed anything for nearly a year now haha

it is a cheap gun, but the main problem is more of a paint issue i'd think
will have to get a mesh strainer or something i guess. see if it helps

armiee, was just normal primer
was that 2pak you are thinking of with that ratio? as all my acrylic stuff says around 150% thinned

yeah it can be brands too. im mainly using Protec and K&H, havent had any real dramas with them. Im using a $60 STAR gun and since buying my compressor havent had any trouble at all, especially with overspray. and yeah i use all 2pak
