So nigelw Are you saying that laney is a crook ? Also you will want to be able to back up a big call like that. We have dealt with him face to face and found him to be fine.

100%, A very reputable and well trusted engine builder that many on this site would know had to resurrect this engine can back that up, quite happy to post some photos as well. I met him face to face and on the surface seemded to be reasonable and trustworthy. Problem came when I checked over the gear more thouroughly at home, no problem normally, guy makes a genuine mistake and the issue gets sorted. Look, this guy can sort this out but he will not return messages, hangs up when you call him and even resorts to telling me he now works in perth and I got ripped so I can go F@@% myself and just get over it. If Laney has a problem with this I would love to talk to him face to face again. Look, I got done, end of story but people who do this need to be singled out.

Well lets get this over with, yeah I was pretty p#$$%d off a year ago but i'm actually over it now but it does feel good to finally vent, no posts on this subject after this. If you think I'm just being a c&%t well at the same time I bought a 1200 sedan from canberra off this forum, guy was honest, car was just as he described, total opposite experience from this scam and sort of what you expect form a forum such as this.

I've attached a photo of the engine just after the head was removed.

What was advertised and thought I was buying:

1 CA18DET, originally an import engine with papers, missing a few parts like injectors but had new timing gear and cam belt
1 Garrett turbo, he was unsure of actual model but had a T3 flange, had been professionally checked over and given the green light for a turbo suitable for a strong CA.
1 Stainless high mount exhaust manifold
1 Set adjustable cam gears
1 Stumpy Gearbox to suit CA18 , new from Mad Dat
1 Partly finished Plenum
1 Partly finished Stainless exhaust
1 Extreme Clutch
1 Lightened standard CA18 Flywheel
1 Mad Dat CA18 engine crossmember for 1200
1 Mad Dat gearbox crossmember for 1200

When I spoke to laney we agreed on $3K, as he said all was as new and in perfect working order, he said he had receipts and it cost him $5k, all seemed sweet. Paid deposit and agreed to pick up later.

Driving back from a job in newcastle I quickly dropped in and picked up the gear, plenum and exhaust was very ordinary but after all I really just wanted the motor, box, xmembers and turbo. I should have at least turned the motor over, yes my stupid fault but I was in a hurry. Additionally he only had the turbo housings, no core. Here I am at his house, I now know where he lives so I gave him the full amount on the promise the turbo core would be delivered in the next few days, again stupid me but nothing seemed out of order, this was not ebay but a forum and a 'trusted' user.

Got home that night and later had a good look over the stuff and found the motor was seized, texted the guy and he rang bang promising me he regulary turned the thing over, anyway I slept on it.

Next day no good, no amount of effort was going to get the CA turning, packed up the motor and took it to my engine guy. What we found: Took the head off and found major corrosion in most cylinders, got a couple out but the other two required major heat from the oxy, both cams where dodgy from corrosion as where the cam followers. Crank cam gear was so seized that it had to be ground and chisled off, CAS was beyond salvage due to corrosion as was the new timing gear, also found all the flywheel bolt holes had damaged threads. This motor at some stage got some water in the pistons and had been seized for a long time, so much for turning it over regularly!

CAM gears. These were not from a CA18 more likely from an RB and dodgy ebay cheapies at that. He had provided some spacers, not only where these badly made but no way would you ever run these unless you want the cam gears to shear off.

PLENUM and EXHAUST, totally unsuitable and poor workmanship, so much so it went straight in the bin.

Stainless Manifold, pretty much butchered beyond use, was a cheapie ebay so no great loss but again not as described

Gearbox, pulled apart, corrosion on the inside, maybe o.k but needs an overhaul at least, again not as described

Rest of the stuff, rusty, missing small stuff like nuts and bolts, useable but definately far from 'As New'

As for the turbo core, many phone calls, emails, texts but no response apart from an email and a phone call that basically said "bad luck" but not in such nice words.

extract from the email.

"im in WA workin in the mines for 6 months. . doin like 12 hour days mate . . so if ur trying to threten me go nuts. . u brought motor as is and everythin with it. . as for the turbo nothin i can do or will do"

So is the guy a crook? the stuff I got for $3K was at best worth $1k.

My first post was just to let other forum members aware of someones dodgey behavior, like most forums most people are enthusiasts and passionate about their hobby, weeding out the shonks can only be of benefit. I'm not 18 any more and why i don't like getting ripped if this happened to a young guy or girl desperate to have a cool car they would be shattered.

Every ca looks like that in the inside . Thanks for the heads up Nigel. I know your not making it up because you wrote such a long post... It's not the fact you got ripped it because you don't want someone else making the same mistakes ... Thanks mate

laney is a good guy to deal with and i have dealt with him MANY MANY MANY times and have yet to have any problems with him....unfortunately stuff like this happens, and as much as its a pain in the backside u gotta deal with it...naming and shaming not always a good idea on a site like this esp when so many people have dealt with the person. i have bought off laney and he has like wise bought off me and we have never had an issue with parts or anything from him...he was even kind enough to do a 3hr trip to drop parts off - at his expense. i see u are a somewhat new member to the site so if u want to name and shame be VERY careful who you try to shame.

as for the shell laney its a shame to see you sell her mate she was coming along so very nicely and i was looking forward to having a spin in her when she was finished
