Guys it's shill bidding. Meaning he has organized someone to bid on his item to inflate the price. I said it at the start.

His other auctions with the cylinder head and the carbs and manifold were just the same sort of pattern, lots of small bids climbing quickly to a high price.

If this(Chris)is what he has organised with his mates,i don't see the point because if his mates end up winning the vendor gets hit with the big ebay fees, and he still has the gear.
Having said that if it's legit i may start thinking about getting out of A series engines/gearboxes/heads/etc etc because i think i could just about afford a Motor Home with the proceeds.

1 set up dummy ebay account
2 bid on own item as long as someone else does
3 win own auction
4 inform second place buyer that 1st buyer pulled out - would you like it for $x???
5 profit $$$$

Its a little harder than that ...

I believe Ebay tracks your IP ... If you sign in with 1 user name (seller) then again with the dummy alarms ring at ebay HQ ...

My brother had this happen with our cousin ... He listed something on ebay and my cousin wanted it, so he bid on it from my bros computer ... They both got their accounts suspended and had to "explain" what happened to ebay before they would unlock the accounts ... And both had 100+ feedback ...

All that said, its no impossible to do ...
