#1 gearbox dead perth,
chuck Posted on: 2004/1/12 1:48
well after having a great run wuth my datto, all went to crap saturday.
The main shaft bearing decided to colapse, well thats what it appeared to be. All in the space of 12 hours. I was however lucky enough to mother it all the way home from perth.
It is now at my local mechanics and awaiting diagnosis and wallet draining potemtial.

Sorry to hear it (and hope it wasn't a 5-speed, since it would be harder to find a replacement).

nah, just the standard 4, but i couldnt beleive how quickly it happened.
I sell bearings for a living and have not known it to happen so quickly.
still who needs this sort of expense.
Just spewin i no longer have the tools or room to do it myself, never mind sh!t happens and life goes on.

Hey sorry to interupt...

I'm wondering when you say 'main shaft bearing' is this the big set of bearings in the enclosed race you can see at the front of the g-box?

Just inside the belhousing?

Cheers

unfortunatley i havent seen the front of a datto gearbox, but if its anything like any other gearbox than the first bearing you will see is the clutch thrust brearing.
if you need a new one, just call into your local bearing company.
part no is any of the following..
SF0820, or
40TRK-1, or
TK40-4A
should be about $40 unless you know someone in ther brg game.

what exactly happened? my 1200 4speed died very quickly (in about half an hour). all it was was the selector arm came loose (theres a little selector "finger" on the end which selects the gears and the bolt came out and it fell off). I pulled the box appart and lock tighted it and wired it back on and its now all good.

nah, my selector was fine, could change gears without a problem, I just had a bearing decided to spit out its cage, therfor all the balls in the bearing no longer had spacing and the bearing would lock up everytime they came in contact with each other.
not a pretty sound, and unfortunately not something that you can hear is about to happen. The cage usually just breaks and the then gets spat out.
Looks like it isnt going to be that expensive either, second hand gearbox with warrantee is approx $150. pretty happy about that.
