Would it be less work and still better
than original to use the bottom mount
and just move the top?
Should have enough clearance and still
much better than original angle.
Thats what I was thinking for mine.

i'd be re-making the bottom mount either way so that its actually secured onto the diff, but theres no reason i couldnt have it mount around the original position. the control arm mounts will most likely dictate where the coilovers can mount in the final setup though

but seems as im cutting the leaf mounts off the diff and making new ones for the control arm mounts i cant really use the stock shock mount anyway, and i doubt it would be strong enough to take the whole weight of the car. not that hard to make up some mounts or steal some mounts off another diff anyway

getting serious with the suspension!, whats you main goal with that? just better traction for take off?

in terms of shock mounts, they are quite strong, in the rally cars we have bent the bottom mount using h145 plates, but the vanttes have really strong ones we use and havent bent. also in the coupes we have broken the top mounts, though they are very different to the wagon one as they just go through the skin of the floor, yours are fixed to a chassis rail

given the beating we give them i tend to think that something similar to the stock mounts would be up to the job of running coil overs, you would have to go too crazy with bracing

1200RC, mainly just trying to get easy height adjustment, no axle tramp and be able to run softer rates in the rear

could achieve that with leaves but its not really that much work to do the coils being only 2/3 link
and sorta just coz i can

so after talking to sikyne about the coilovers and the lack of travel, ive started to look at lowering the bottom mount a bit to fit and longer coilover to get some more travel

retty much counts out the brand i was looking at as they have a 14, 15 and 17" coilover but the 14 and 15 have the same travel so theres no point going the 15". then the 17" is a bit too long and the bottom mount would be getting to close to the road

so had a look at GAZ coilovers and i found one site that was kinda helpful and figured out they come in a length that would suit perfectly and have 5.5 inchs of travel....but finding decent info on the actual shocks themself is proving rather difficult. looking at the actual gaz site they seem to have a range of different models...but #OOPS# all info on them and no pricing. and the other site i was looking at only lists one model

so its all just being annoying, no one seems to know how to provide decent info on their products

i take it this is for the rear coil overs, not the front ones

yeah for the rears, fronts and done and dusted

anyways, just happened to find a coilover strut sitting in the workshop that was about the right size that i need. have decided on a 13.5-14 inch ride height on the struts which should give me some better options for struts that actually have some travel

so this is kinda what i will look like

that is with the bottom mount 6.5-7 inches down from the centre line of the diff, which isnt too much further down than a standard r31 shock mount that sits around 6 inches
also gives me about 90mm from the shock to the ground which should be right given that its right beside the wheel
so now just have to re-evaluate my coilover choices and actually buy something so i can start actually making stuff

also finished off the turbo manifold...kinda. still need to clean it up a bit but its all welded and is at my engine builders getting the flange milled flat again
