Anyone know if VicRoads needs to be notified of a modification (and VASS certificate etc ) if you install a 5-speed in a 120y?

Technically, It would need an engineers tick if it had a non standard gearbox crossmember.

If it was neatly made and painted i`d be surprised if any roadworthy certification place would pick up on it.

I personaly would fit it and say nothing. You`d be mad to do anything else!!

A roadworthy inspection cannot fail you for a mod if it is safe and properly executed, the following is from the VicRoads Roadworthiness document:

"In these circumstances an examination should be confined to checking that the modification appears to be properly executed and not in a condition which presents a hazard."

And:

"A VASS approval certificate should only be requested by a Licensed Vehicle Tester, when a vehicle modification,
which affects handling, structural integrity or compliance with the standards for registration, does not appear to comply with good industry practices."

Also see VSI 8 section 3 for approved mods that do not require certification:

unless you have to cut and weld in a section of the trans tunnel, it's unlikely it will ever come up.

I remember as a teen helping a mate with a car, we made our own crossmember (and it was a very rough piece of work to say the least) and a roadworthy tester knocked it back. But it was really bad - I honestly think someone could have made a better one with pieces of wood, glued together with flour and water.

I remember reading about a guy who installed a celica 5 speed in a holden and felt that he didn't need a crossmember so he put a brick in between the firewall and rear of engine. It was going fine until he hit a bump and the brick fell out. You can imagine what happened next.
