Well this weekend was very eventful, finished putting together my mkII's and got some tyres fitted and slapped them on the front, now just need another pair for the back.
On Sunday headed down to greendog's place armed with chopped springs + lowering blocks haha
So in the mad heat we threw those bad boys in and got it alot closer to the deck.
On the way home, cooked the motor cos its been overheating and i can't figure out why, so now today im pulling it apart to check it out.
It all looks in pretty good shape to me at the moment just gotta wait for Dad to get home to sus it all out for me.
And in tradition of a good build i have a few pics;

Yeah we were flat out at work today so didnt get a chance to organise it to be picked up, but hopefully tomorrow the engine reconditioners will come pick it up. Also the radiator shop was closed "due to illness" so didn't get that done either. Might take couple weeks yet at this rate haha was hoping to have it done by next week but oh well....
Im just praying it goes back together properly and runs like a dream cos i havn't experienced that yet its been a costly motor so far

Sucks to hear about the motor. I thought he was charging a bit much for a 80hp A15 but I can't be sure.

Anyhow you said you cooked the motor, what actually happened? Did it cease? And how hot was 'overheating', sounds like a dumb question but I ran my last A12 a couple of times and it got very very hot (up to the 'H') for a fairly extended period of time. But I did not have any major drama's.

My new A12 that I just built was running very cold, I thought it felt right but thought I'd check anyway, so I replaced the temp sender and there we go! Nice temp mid-way up the guage, maybe just a tad over. So perhaps you have a faulty sender and another issue altogether (i.e; oiling issue?).

Chris

On the hour long drive home from Nick's it gradually eased up to over the H so i then stopped 10 mins from home, and it took 2 litres of water, went back down to operating temp, then as i drove home it went slowly up again, then when i got home it took another litre, and went back down to operating temp.
Getting the head checked and cleaned up today, what do i ask them to do? Clyons, Jmac?
Could it have been the radiator blocked, all this time?
Also there was like orangey-pinky hard bits gathering in the water galleries, whats that?
Im just dumbfounded, cos the head gasket is in top condish and no signs of wear.

The head will need to be checked for straightness because the excess heat could have warped it. You might want the hardness checked but I personally wouldn't bother.

If you want it cleaned ask for a hot-wash or dip (whichever they call it) get them to give the head a decent flush and replace the welsh plugs.

If you want it serviced ask for a valve regrind and a check on the valve guides ask them to check the spring pressures to see that they are nice and taught and uniform in spring pressures. There are a few other things to ask for but that will probably do it.

So did the engine actually burn out or did you just retire it from service? If it didn't burn out get the head milled, check the block surface, check thermostat, check all coolant lines and flush that damn radiator. If you are finding orangey pink chunks I have no idea what that is (a pic would help) but you can guarantee that those chunks are throughout your radiator. Sounds like they're bits of corrosion and rubbish it might pay to use a quality coolant or different coolant this time.

I do not understand the need to top the coolant up if you insist the gasket is fine, be sure there are no leaks elsewhere, if you can upload pics of the head surface, the block surface and both sides of the head gasket (no camera-phone pics, need clear ones).

If your motor is still turning over nicely I would put a straight edge across the head to check how flat it is, then pay the $30 or whatever it is to get it planed and then check the entire coolant system then put it back together.

Be sure to try another Temperature sender as well just to make sure your readings are correct.
