Hey guys

I'll shortly be looking for a couple of decent rear tyres for the 120y.

local (aust) purchase from a shop
205/14, in a race compound.
may go wider, possibly up to 225 but won't know til my diff is in
may consider drag radials if there's anything available in 14" locally

Can anyone let me know the current options in R-compound or similar?

Tyretech in Brisbane for R Spec.
Yokys 175,185,195/60-14,fairly sure they do a 205 and 225 also but not on my list.
Toyos 205/55-14,225/50-14
Rough round figures about $230 per corner
Cheers

Great!

Any thoughts on any of the models in particular? Really only interested in accelerative grip, although a tyre that lasts a decent amount of time in everyday driving would be nice.

Hi Leigh given your intended usage will lean more towards drags than circuit I would suggest you buy some really good drag radials for the rear.
You can then pick up some cheap second hand semi slicks if you do decide to track the car. For example I recently bought some near new 205/50/15 KU36 semis for $350.

If this isn't suitable I don't think you can go past the Toyo R888 for bang for buck.

I have NFI when it comes to drag radials but 14" is a bit of an orphan when it comes to circuit rubber. Most brands only offer a 185/60 or 195/60 but the Toyo R888 is available in 225/50/14 and 205/55/14.

Hornibrook Motorsport is where Sam and I get tyres from.

Drag radials aren't an ideal tyre for street use. They'll wear out stupidy quick. If you want to drag race, you're better off having a spare pair of wheels that you can fit at the track.

I was impresed when I borrowed your 888s, Matt. I think they were 205s, not sure though as it was quite a while back now. I think they would double fairly well as a street/strip tyre, drag radials are a bit unrealistic for a car that is 95%+ used on the road.

Sorry Leigh for some reason I thought you already had decent street rubber and this was more for competition.

The R888s will be fine for a combination of street, drag and circuit. I have driven on the them in the rain many times and they are OK as long as you are careful, however they are not as good as a traditional street tyre for wet conditions.

The ones you borrowed from me were 205/50/15.

From memory they were around $280-$290 a corner from Hornibrook.

I think I paid around $1100 for the set as the front 195s are a bit cheaper.
