Hi guys just wondering if anyone has tried to make and fit a wooden hard cover for there ute???
I'm keen to try this out but wanted to know if anyone has attempted this and if so what problems they had etc.... Now i know wood doesn't last that long in the weather unless you treat it, i guess its just a matter of looking after it or replacing it when it starts to warp etc.... If anyone has any idea's on how to go about this i would love to hear them... I mean making it is the easy part its attaching it to the body! or which way you want it to open!!!! I'm up for suggestions guys.... cheers

Hmm seems like more work than it's worth mate, especially when fibreglass kits can be bought for $1500 and are most likely lighter. That said, if I was going to make one, i'd use a marine ply, probably 13mm, with some sort of bracing underneath. Weather durable, fairly light and could come up neat. But yeah, each to their own

personally carps the fiberglass made ones would be better then wood as the wood will warp in the sun and don't know how long it would last

We made a marine plywood frame and fiberglassed / painted over the top.
Turned out good and has lasted, only downside is it is pretty heavy. Lemme know if you want some pics.

Gee that seems like way more effort than it's worth, especially if you want a top quality finish. I'm a carpenter and I wouldn't even bother going that far haha, when kits can be bought for a decent price

yeah the maddat ones look nice but i don't want the datsun logo on it...
although yours looks like it hasn't got one????? i like the smooth look. I'm tempted to make a mould out of wood and then make my own fibre glass one i know this will take some time and mucking around but it will be worth it in the long run.. Plus i can give the mould to guys around the perth area if they are keen too....

yeah you can get it with or without the logo, i wouldnt have bought it with the logo, it's hideous haha
me and a mate were thinkin about making one for our utes but came to the conclusion that a we wouldnt be able to get as nice a fit and b it would cost more than a 1000 a pop to get a mould and 2 lids made lol You can view topic.
