more progress

got a few jobs done,

my oil cooler arrived and spent a bit of time working out where i can fit it in the front of my car , not very much space available. Its only a 7row which will be fine for the 4age. its going to be mounted/suspended using long bolts from the radiator support down. this is only the old original bonnet to check the spacing of the release latch etc, im not going for a rat rod look!

once i get the fittings and braided hose i can mount it properly once and for all.

next i picked up a small airbox from my favourite manufacturer DAIHATSU. its from a g200 charade and is a great fit and costs less than nothing. I had to create a few aluminium brackets, one on the side and one underneath for some support an rigidity. Tie it all down with some allen key bolts and it looks pretty neat i think. a black 90 degree silicon bend will complete the project :)

Made up a little block off plate underneath my throttle body, this is an ugly and unnecessary part of the intake manifold. It basically runs water through the throttle body in other countries where it can freeze up when not in use..

As we have seen this week in sydney i will not need this function.Ii could leave it sitting there like most people do, but i found it to be ugly with the several pipes running out of it then i would have to loop or block of with rubber hoses.

Before

What i did was unscrew the section of throttle body and get my hands on some 8mm aluminium plate. I hit up my local sheetmetal place in the industrial area and asked nicely for an offcut or scrap they had lying around and the blokes were nice enough to even cut it for me to size. Give it all a good clean while its apart.

Clamp the original piece to the aluminum plate to use as a template for drilling the holes, it must be airtight and a perfect fit to re-install onto the throttle body. no air leaks please.

Apply gasket sealant and apply a good amount. i bought new screws as well for a tight fit.

Slowly ticking off my list!

Cheers
Except for the neons, my mates like to add #OOPS# while we stare at the car and drink beer!

^^^^ sounds like a great build.. should sound great

I have finally collected all of the metal/chrome parts needed for my front end, including my super cool badge. Many run the plastic front end but in my opinion looks cheap and not as old school as the metal front..

It will need some restoring and polishing to come up looking presentable but thats half the fun isnt it...

Had a muck around tonight on the datsun and got a few things done.
1st up is my dash which is in a sorry state with many cracks and needs to be retrimmed, before i can do that i have to remove the dash/gauge panel which will have to be refurbed aswell.

here are the two gauge panels i have, one has a clock that will be replaced with the tacho from the bottom one, note the mph speedo lol

i plan to renew the gauge panel with new paint and repaint all the details like heater controls and blinker surrounds etc

while i was on a roll i fitted my new horn and aerial which involved drilling into my a pillar a couple of pilot holes for the screws (scary stuff). both items are very retro and chromed so they suit the era.

long time since an update, dont kid yourself there has been plenty of work being done..

in our last episode i had taken apart my dash, gauges, dash pad and all switches. i then sent the dash pad off to
Dashboard Recovering Services, 3/8 Vangeli st, Arndell Park 9672 7183.
to get my dash pad refurbed. Ian did a fantastic job , it looks like it just rolled off the production line, he matched the original vinyl and colour, redid the glovebox and ashtray lids and cleaned up the metal frame and park brake lights. A fantastic job it made me so happy when i collected it considering the terrible condition it was in when i dropped it off.. some of the cracks in the dash were an inch wide and 2 cms deep.

Now i have to redo the gauge panel which means hand painting the gauge surrounds in silver and all the heater controls with white paint, very tedious and not something you want to stuff up and have to do over.

Ive been slowly collecting the parts needed for my brake conversion, Its a ca18det rotor and caliper upgrade which conveniently bolts onto my original hubs with minimal massaging. A brake caliper adapter has been laser cut, new bendix ultimate pads and spanking new rotors!!!!

now that my dash board is back and the engine wiring is all complete its time for body loom and accesories wiring including the new thermo fan, lights, blinkers, parkers, horn and wiper washer bag along the radiator support.

In keeping with the engine bay wiring so far everything will be a stealth as i can get it.

[URL=http://img405.imageshack.us/i/1006350.jpg/]Open in new window

so it will run in the channel underneath and along the radiator support panel out into the FR gaurd and into the interior.

[URL=http://img571.imageshack.us/i/1006353.jpg/]Open in new window

Headlights, hazards etc are all wired but of course in the process i have found my indicator stalk has bit the dust along with my turn signal relay which has held up a bit of the wiring adventure :(

[URL=http://img535.imageshack.us/i/img0869a.jpg/]Open in new window

ive finished mounting up the oil cooler now in a small cavity in the front end, just between the thermo fan and grill, its only a 7 row which will be fine for the mighty
4AGE..

[URL=http://img839.imageshack.us/i/1006349c.jpg/]Open in new window

i also picked up another set of wheels for the car, great deal mainly for the tyres but i think they kinda suit the 80's look of the car, so i might rock these every once in a while or just swap the tyres onto some other rims??
