Clearly a spacer plate reduces the need for machining of the input shaft

Which input shaft? We are searching for a non-A-series 5-speed that is inexpensive, readily available and can be adapted easily.

does that affect clamping force

Transmission does not need require high strength bolts. As long as the adapter is carefully machined the transmission will line up correctly.

I am dreaming of a better swap, something that's more available than 30-year old L-series transmissions. Something like small & light six-speeds.

But perhaps that the L-series 5-speed is still the most economical choice at the moment. L-series has three of four release bearing carrier lengths and A-series has two flywheel thicknesses, so some combintations may work fine with an adapter plate. Is it the L-series input shaft diameter, or input shaft length that is different from A-series?

T5 box has the cheapest close ratio gearsets in the world
by at least 5 times cheaper than other boxes.
1095 USD for countless choice eg. 2.6, 1.9, 1.4,1:1,.75

T5 from S10 world class box is 33kg or 2kg less than mustang
35kg rated from a T5 book that Simon has. Mustang has fairly
close ratios from factory and avail from local falcon from
1985 onwards there are codes you can check online for gears.

5mm spacer between auto A series bellhousing and t5 box is
all thats needed in steel with 4 taps for t5 end and about
6 for the auto bell end. Input shaft comes out easily from
T5 to be machined to suit A series crank spigot bush and
Auto bellhousing needs to be modded for cable or Hdraulic.

just in case someone is feeling creative in the summer break
the spacer plate DD has shown in the previous page could work
with a smaller bellhousing of the CA engines. They are much
narrower than the L series boxes and more common.
37cm wide vs 33cm as I can remember makes fitting easier.
Also ca20 bellhousings are smooth case in most cars.
a 5mm thick plate with dowells 2 suit L, CA boxes and A series bolt pattern would be gold
eg. something like this laser or waterjet cut

Hhmmm some good ideas here, a 6 speed with a huge top gear would be awesome

Im happy with my 4.11 diff cos I can accelerate realy well ,but I want. A huge top gear so I can go crazy fast ,like 230km without doing a million revs

Maybe a miata 6 speed ? ,there an awesome feeling box and would be compact coming from a small light car ,ide be keen as to see if that would be viable
