I believe that's just a dust shield...

on a12 and 56 boxes i've seperated they've only had the dust shield, not the full size backing plate, i guess this is because they've got the right combo of flywheel/carrier/length etc?

Yes, the 56L just needs a dust shield. Because the 56L is longer than than the 56A, it doesn't need the spacer plate. The plate would put the release lever pivot ball too far away from the flywheel and clutch.

Thanks for all the replys
I did not know (until now) that the 56A was shorter

I will use the plate and take a guess on which carrier to use

Anyone know exactly which carrier the factory used with this combo: A12, A12 flywheel, backing plate and a 56A box (ie 120y or late 1200 ute)

Engine does not matter.

With A12 flywheel and 56A box, per the wiki you can use either of these two combinations:
* short bearing sleeve (with no engine plate)
or
* engine plate (with standard long Release Bearing sleeve)
