Tailshaft problems

I have had vibration problems recently on my 1200 ute and I took the tailshaft out to go and get the Unis replaced and was told that the unis had been welded in by the previous person that had replaced them and the only way to do it properly is to make a whole new shaft at a low price of $650.. Has anyone come across this problem before. Did all datsun tailshafts have pressed unis, or has anyone got a second hand sunny tailshaft which I might be able to get modified.

That's the highest price I've ever heard: $650. Other people are paying $250 or less.

That price would make me doubt everything they said. I've never heard of 'welded-in' u-joints, so perhaps you should get a second opinion.

Maybe there is nothing wrong with your tailshaft. It's easy to test it yourself. If it is out of the vehicle, moving each joint in all directions. It should be smooth with slight resistance. If it binds, pops, or is loose then the joints need replacing. If it seems good, maybe it just needs balancing. If the shaft was ever dropped, it can get out of balance.

Just rang G.J Driveshafts and they quoted me $200 just to cut and shut the diff end of the tailshaft and fit new yokes with commodore Unis. Might just get this done for now and worry about the gearbox end later.

The price they quoted me was the 'unseen' price not including uni's so it sounds right.

Heck of a lot better than $650

good luck
