For anyone needing Engine mounts look up Mackay Rubber products an Australian company who make mounts and hoses for almost anything.
For competition use look at doing what Ford used on the RS1800 rally cars, they made a mount with a tubular section to which they fitted Ford transit leaf spring front Rubbers this gives you the absorbtion of rubber but being fully enclosed the rubber will never tear as can happen with traditional mounts especially when Rallying, the mechanics of design will vary with the application but can be adapted to most engine requirements for a pretty much trouble free setup as long as your welding skills are up to scratch.

Thanks PIGDOG, you always come through with the goods. I might look into them or even making the blue nolathane ones, they look great and very simple. Cheers for all you replies, I love this site

you would be transmitting a lot of vibration and stress through to your car chassis that would have been dampened by proper mounts

cheap yes, effective no

Um don't a lot of people run solid mounts? And poly mounts too? Pretty standard I thought, good for getting the power down.

nvh goes through the roof but man my cars already a bit on the wilder than milder side nvh wise. i ditched the radio for some of this reason, cd skipped, but also so little sound deadenting, it got a bit loud in there.

better to cruise in car noise than radio noise

i understand theory that yes needs some harmonic dampening but the bush type material should take some out, limiting most movement, but still have a litle give. Better than sloppy stock mounts.

As my cars not a daily, and driven mostly for fun, im considering the stiff engine mounts and leaving the stock rubber trans mount to absorb some of the vibrations maybe. solid mounting both seems to be stupid and asking for trouble.

I dont think you would want the gearbox to be able to twist if the engine is solid mounted.
Some people would be kidding themselves if they thought their datsun had low nvh
