You are right in what you say, but his symptoms were the other way around. It would idle, but no more than that. I suspect that if it was left to idle long enough, the heat would have dried it out some & it would have been driveable. Who's to know at the time.

Ignition components should be regarded as a serviceable consumeable, & when the cap, rotor & leads start showing their age, then consign them to the garbage & fit new ones. I have hot pressure washed my engines many times & have never had a problem, but i always have ignition parts in "as new" condition. The glossy surface of new parts causes the water to ball & roll off like on a fresh polish & wax job. Old ones hold water like an oxidised paint job.

New caps & rotors are cheap, particularly when compared to the inconvenience & cost of a breakdown.
