Those gearboxes look a bit easier to do than the 71b box. The bell housings look like they are a similar diameter where they join. The 56a to 71b had about 5mm of gap to fill most of the way around. It might have been just because of where i joined it but i dont think so.

Who ever made that jig would probably still have it aswell.

EDIT: in those second lot of pics, the front part of the bell housing doesnt look like an A series housing, maybe an L series?.

Looks L series to me. The starter position gives it away being on the 'up' side of the crank. the A series is 'down of the crank center line.

Either way, that is how a guy did it and it appears to have worked well. I like the idea of using a crans substitute to allign the box at the bearing but to me there is still no solid guarantee it will allign.

It puts into perspective the sheer size of the bell on the 6 speed. The other thing to note is how much longer the spigot isw on the 6 speed, as the flywheel used is a dual mass unit and wider. Like all Nissan Dual Mass box's they have a longer spigot area as the clutch sits further back. I have not pulled one of these box's apart yet, I may well have to have a crack.

The 6-speed input shaft does not extrude past the SR bellhousing. Because of that thick flywheel.

The gear ratios are better for A-series than any close-ratio 5-speed box. Plus it has one overdrive gear.

But this was only made for a few years only: S15. So that limits availability. But you could perhaps use the S2000/MX-5 version which is the same gearbox.

How is the durafix method any better than welding? With a 71 gearbox, just weld a plate to the old cut and weld the new shut to it. That'll take care of a 5mm gap.

Another problem is, with alot of welding, after the job has cooled down, there will be alot of stress introduced that can pull the job out of shape. A heat treatment process called annealing is used. Pre heating the job to temprature helps prevent this, in some cases it almost eliminates it. I would not object to bostly welding the job, at least 50% of the requiored surface area and filling the rest with durafix or simular.

DD the durafix is not better than tig welding just a lazy butt way of me trying to find an easier way.

That engine has a skirt definitely again not A series.
Looks like L for sure with the ribbing and 80s colour :)
