#1 In Your Opinion.....
AgentWright007 Posted on: 2012/2/3 21:06
Hey guys, I just wanted to get as many opinions as possible on something.

Question: If you were going to put a new engine, tranny, rear end etc. into a 1979 B310 (like mine) what engine, tranny, rear end would you choose. Keep in mind you're trying to be somewhat economical with the spending.

Thanks guys, i'd love any feedback!

economical to me means getting the most bang for the $$ so I would be thinking of something like a std. SR20DET/6spd combo.

Keep it all std and reuse the donor car wiring, ecu etc., some simple fuel, brake, diff upgrades to make it safe and reliable, job done..

More than enough power std with plenty in reserve should you get the bug in the future.

good point, the sensible modifier uses parts that are in abundance and cheap. I would lean towards an L20 with older gear or Even just an A15 with a few trick parts as that inimises the rest of the driveline upgrades.

Rear end - 1981-1982 S110 (200SX) $200 at Pick-n-Pull has disk brake, H190 rear, and only 2" wider than stock.

Engine & Transmission. S13/S14 KA24DE with 5-speed. $600 if you find someone taking it out to put some smaller import engine in.

First I have some questions: Does your car have to be smogged?? Which engine A14 or A15?

There are several things you can do with the engine in the car, if it has the MPG motor w/small port cylinder head changing it out would boost things.

What I would do is swap the cylinder if it's not oval port, install a GX spec camshaft (very mild street cam), use a GX .6mm Head Gasket, clean up the ports (the valve seats protrude into the ports effectively shrinking the port by near 2mm) get a good valve job, upgrade to a weber DGV carb, exhaust header and all the other basic motor building stuff.................the stock engine is 78-80HP. You could easily add 15-20HP to that. If you buy all the parts from members, pic a part and Ebay you could probably get it done for as little as $500 if you spend several months gathering parts.

Now an upgrade to a 2 liter engine is a great choice but we are only talking motor here, you WILL want to upgrade the brakes, wheels and add some sway bars to it so you end up with a well rounded car. Again shopping carefully you could mange to get the brake wheel suspension upgrade to match the motor for another $500-600.

Now if your budget covers a 2 liter motor swap and suspension then go for it.

Keep in mind my version of a fun cheap car to play with means it doesn't go over about $2500.

As its a b310 won't a 620 (180b) xmenber bolt straight in?

So l series or k series should go in easy and cheaply enough. Diff get a h190 unshortened and flare the rear arches.... Cheap too. Only tail shaft is my question as may need to pay to have done.

Brakes, violet should go in and stop an l series, brake booster is same part number I think.

We dont do emissions testing in Indiana so that part isn't a big deal. there have been a lot of great suggestions and I appreciate it. The rear end in this car definitely has to go, it's a replacement from the original that had shredded gears. This one also has whining issues, and it make the car pull to the right. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure i've read that the axles snap in these if you put a turbo on an a15. the 200sx diff seems like a viable option. I wouldnt putting a turbo on my existing engine, along with a new cam, but where do I find these parts?
