Would love to but already playing with claires, getting ready for rally season and engineering a cadet. The heavier car starts with a bigger motor and therefore is easier and cheaper to get enough power

Given that it is a small car forum, I think that it should remain a small car theme, fwd or rwd makes no difference to me but is there going to be a cubic capacity cap, 4 or 6 cylinder rule etc?

One of the things I like about the ozdat challenge is that it is stretched over a few events like hill climb,motokana etc, so it gives cars of different levels a fair crack at the title. Because no $1300 datsun will crack a 13.99 ET without a certain amount of fibbing. Plus maki.g it over a few events will give other cars that are already built like Mik's 1200 that is only worth $1500 a crack at the title.

Budget V's Budget Built?

One thing's for sure imo and that is that it needs to be a new challenge tailered fo the 1200 forum.

Actually looking at Nicks pulsar e15et recently its hard to beat doing one of those up for this challenge, they would have to be the cheapest datsun/nissans atm that are capable of big hp and good numbers by stripping their heavy interiors. Ive seen them hovering from 400 to 1200 with alot of work done to them already.

Not for me though Im not into fwd

Been following this with interest, not likely I will join in as I am only home 2 days a week as it is without disappearing into the shed

Anyway, have my 2c to add, how about these for rules?

1. Base car must be a 1200 or a thou. They are the point of this site aren't they
2. no limit on what the car costs to purchase - reason is that a lot of people won't have the room or $$ to get another car specifically for this challenge and so can use their existing datto
3. the $1300 limit comes in towards anything that isn't standard (and by standard I mean as it was delivered from the factory! Not how you bought it standard with a CA!).
4. suspension and brakes can be upgraded with other "bolt on" datto units for "free". More a safety issue than anything.

Have at it and see what can be run with it! Bring on the 13's!

Wise words (not you Mick! :) a 13 is a 13 thats for sure) 1200, 1000 preferred and maybe for the spirit of this site lets keep it the beloved A series.

good running stock car spend 1300 clams for 13 seconds sounds like a good challenge.

I had a chat with Simon about this on the weekend because it seems like a good idea. It does need some fine tuning but in principle it is a worthy challenge. And the drag strip is a good way to do it as nearly everybody has access to a drag strp so posting a pic of a time slip is easy enough.

So after the discussion, a few rules were nutted out.

Must be a Datsun 1000, 1200 or sunny. (all related to this site)

Engine combination is open.

Anything considered a performane enhancing modification is part of the budget.

Oils, gaskets, brake pads etc, that are considered basic maintenence of your origional fitted equiptment will not be part of the budget.

The idea is really just to, if you can afford it, is give it a crack. be reasonable about it, you will need 'to an extent' prove what you have spent on it.

Personally I think its a great idea. Get a V6 commo for a couple of hundred, bash it into a wreck, cheap T3 turbo? Rising rate pressure reg, second hand exhaust bits, a bit of tin to protect you from the mid mount conversion. And belt it down the quarter. If you get 14 or 15 seconds, post what you achived and a pic of the time slip.
