Ive been told you cant get arp bolts for the a series motors but you can use Subaru bolts which are just as good but they (or the bolck) need a little modifying. Does anyone know anything about this? Im trying to persue it but if anyone knows it would help. Feral, Dodgeman, DD?

We have both read of some pretty nasty A series engines, some with a lot of boost, but i don't recall anyone mentioning a big end bolt upgrade, so i had assumed that the stock bolts were up to the task. If you chose to go with the stockers, i recomend that tou
A. Get new ones, &
B. Have them crack tested with a reputable crack testing method BEFORE you use them.

Back in the 70's when 289 & 302 Fords were the hot setup, the big money engine builders were buying new rod bolts by the bucketfull & the reject rate on NEW bolts was running between 20% to as high as 40% in some batches. These were returned for warranty claim. [exchanged for another bucketfull] These reject bolts were probably OK in a stocker, but were not risked in an expensive "built" motor.

Datsun parts are quite naturally of much higher quality, but check them anyway just in case an industrial saboteur from Toyotarrrgh has thrown a dud one in the parts bin. [Damned saboteurs]

Theres not much if anything available here in OZ for 8mm bolts. I have previously used 5/16" bolts and had the rods modded to take the bigger bolts.
The subari ones may be a good option especially from STI???

Hey Feral.
Go and interview Shuggy, as I think he's got something that might be ok. Not cheap, though.

Thanks 89mm. As a result of this thread, I have just found out ARP now make 8mm bolt sets for the early L24's!!! Why didnt I know? (Because I didnt ask)

These sound like the way to go and would be a heap cheaper than my 5/16" bolt conversion.

Oh? I was told ARP didnt make 8mm bolts! Are they (the L24) the same length as a series? how hard would it be to cut them down? Do you have the part no's for ordering them? who do you deal through? sorry about the delay, I ve been away.

Ive just been talking to a guy about bolts via email and he said he used arp bolts in his a15 all that was required was a bit of machining of the head to face up to the a15 slot. If i find anything more ill keep you updated
