so is it legal to put the ca18det in a 1200 ute and have it registered in nsw now? i only ask because i have had this project going for about 7 years and want to know if this is still doable, many thanks

mattkinsela - Yes, it always has been legal hasn't it? Whilst some may not know this, the 1200 ute, being a ute, is considered a 'commercial vehicle' and is therefore exempt from the usual rule relating to engine capacity vs tare weight...

how does the chassis come into it? i thought it was limited by the fact 1200s dont have a full chassis

1200 utes have a full chassis. Did you mean body-on-frame construction? It does not have a full frame.

Depends how you read the rules. Yes a full chassis would make it a NA category vehicle. Also if the difference in weight between the unladen weight and the GVM is more than twice the weight of the passengers (68kg each) it is considered to be a goods vehicle and therefore a NA category commercial vehicle.

Lamb_daiquiri - In theory yes but keep in mind that no engineer is going to put his name on something that is unsafe.
Lethal_john - Where is this 800kg rule? Can you provide a link to it?
