Hi guys im looking at getting a new coil but apparently theres two different types,my ute is an 84 model.Which one do i buy,super resistor or high performance resistor.

Neither. Buy a Nissan coil.

It depends on which distributor you have.

* If you have the Nissan/Datsun electronic ignition, get the resistor-less Nissan unit (same as Bluebird or Pulsar). This is the high-energy coil.

* If it has points, get a 12V coil which uses your existing 1200 resistor. You can use any Datsun coil for points.

Neither have coil with built-in resistor. The famous [edit:]GT40 will replace the stock 1200 coil & resistor, but is no more powerful than the stock unit.

If you want a Red coil, or Chrome coil, the [edit:]GT40R and some other brands work OK. But don't expect a performance or fuel economy increase.

So dd a 12v coil is what i need as it has points.

Datsun points distributors use a 12V coil, along with an external resistor.

Here is a stock 1200 coil, marked 12V

Bosch: GT40R (can style) or GT40RT (transformer style) are direct replacements. The R means use external resistor (to correct what was said above).

The Bosch black coil is SU12R $38 at Supercheap

If you prefer red, get the GT40R.

Condenser

Every other industry calls the condenser/ suppressor a capacitor. It's there to limit the peak voltage on the points side of the coil to stop arcing across the points.

In an electronic ignition it limits the voltage across the electronic switch. If that fails you'll blow ignition fuses and it can be really hard to trace. I had an intermittent fault with on in an old holden and it melted the resistor wire that feeds the coil. I then had to rewire it. Fortunately the datsun uses a ballast resistor, much easier to change.
