I dont know when it was released but when I last checked the alloy carriers where only available for 8.8 and 9 inch diffs now for the 8 inch and cheap!

http://www.currieenterprises.com/cestore/ProductsRE.aspx?id=2435

for the 8 inch diff which are easy to come by and much better choice than a cast iron 8 inch hilux that has no alloy carrier available.

LSD are 524 usd

not bad at all, it's a better option than a Borg Warner 68 or 78, and won't be long and BW78 bits will get hard to come by now.... as it is the crush tubes on BW 68's are NLA... not to mention there is not a LSD option for BW68's...

looking at my options for diffs too, thought about BW68, but don't like how I'm limited ratio wise with the whole diff needing to come out to be setup right... 4.11 gears though *mouth waters* especially with a nice A15 or L18 with a nice 4 speed or 3N71B...

I have heard the diff in THe Defect III have a metallic "tink tink tink sound (sound of impending doom)...

Been looking for a while of an alloy aftermarket carrier for the Hilux but gave up trying to find one and its a shame as the lsd are easy to mod from a supra and cheap at wreckers so could be a good diff bar the weight.

8 inchers are much easier to come by and lsd is cheaper than a H190 so all up could be a good upgrade.

in between the pinion beraings... it sets the bearing preload

thought I'd like to try a 4.10 ratio BW68, but not if I can't get the right paarts to do it...

and I like the 120Y BW68 width rather than getting a KE30 BW68...

Just get a shim cut to size and sandwich with a used crush tube, it allows you to compress the crush tube further and get the right preload and pinion nut tension will be where it needs to be too.

Stock rear-end on most Ford vehicles of the 1960s & 1970s, 8-inch differentials are lighter in construction & have a 28-spline axle. The 8-inch differential will hold up behind the strongest 289 & 302 cubic-inch engines while being 45.4kg lighter than the 9-inch.

I've never seen an 8" ever ... so popularity here might be an issue
But since you can buy a housing etc from currie I guess you could build one no probs

Just as an FYI, as is obvious from my H190 post, I've been checking all the options. To get a custom complete rear axle will set you back between $2300-2600. That is everything axle tube, axles LSD diff and brakes. You could pick up some parts used and possible shave this down a bit.....................but I still think the minimum is 2K. If I get lucky I may have my H190 completed for $1500, and that is with selling off the extra bits from the parts car the housing came out off. There doesn't appear to be many cheap options left.

RT- for the 8 inch the viscous centre I listed is 524usd and ally carrier 330 or so, then if you use their services they can shorten the housing you supply for around 280, axles custom are 150 each so its looks better than h190 as the R&P new are 190-220 each also for your choice of ratios.
